Patio Bar opened in December 2022 at the former X-Wray cafe premises on Essex Street in Fremantle. Its original pitch was a neighbourhood small bar built around local hospitality, independent drinks producers, share plates and an outdoor deck—not a claim that it is Fremantle’s “newest” bar today.

Where is Patio Bar?

Patio Bar’s reported address is 4/3–13 Essex Street, Fremantle, next to Luna Palace Cinema, according to PerthNow’s December 2022 opening report. A third-party listing gives the same address and says it checked it against the operator’s website on 20 September 2026: Australian Atlas’ Patio Bar listing.

The address is corroborated, but current operating status, opening hours and booking arrangements are not established by those reports. Check directly with the venue before making a trip.

What replaced X-Wray cafe?

Patio Bar moved into the former X-Wray cafe space. Broadsheet reported that X-Wray had closed in 2016 and that the new owners wanted to carry forward its reputation as a welcoming local place. The three co-owners—Kim Isaac, Max Kordyl and Rhela Belton—were described as long-time Fremantle residents.

PerthNow reported that Patio Bar launched quietly in December 2022, roughly a month after the owners received the keys. Isaac said they redesigned the venue quickly as a place they themselves would want to visit. The look was described as relaxed, with Australian colours and natural light tones rather than a strong theme.

What was the bar and food offering?

Broadsheet’s March 2023 feature described a drinks list focused on small and independent producers. It named minimal-intervention wines from Chouette Wine in the Swan Valley and LS Merchants in Margaret River, alongside craft beer and cocktails.

The food was presented as shareable small plates. Examples in that 2023 report included:

  • Meatballs and braised lentils
  • Focaccia with whipped ricotta
  • Cheese served with pickles

Broadsheet also reported vegan and gluten-free food options, gluten-free beers and non-alcoholic drinks. These are historical menu details, not confirmation of what is served now; the current menu has not been established.

Does Patio Bar have an outdoor area?

Broadsheet reported an outdoor deck and weekend DJs in March 2023. Its feature also described plans for local-chef kitchen takeovers and charity fundraisers. Australian Atlas’ 2026 listing likewise describes a deck and weekend DJs, but a listing is not a current event schedule. Confirm current amenities and programming with the venue before visiting for a particular event.

What was the idea behind Patio Bar?

The opening coverage framed the venue as an effort to make a comfortable, community-oriented place where people could gather over good drinks. In Broadsheet’s 2023 feature, Isaac described the aim as a “community-driven, beating heart, social connection kind of place,” adding “but with good drinks.” She also said the owners wanted to spotlight small producers and grow alongside them.

That combination—local character, independent drinks, casual plates and a flexible social space—was the reported concept at launch. It explains the connection to X-Wray without suggesting Patio Bar is the same business or that its current offering remains unchanged.
