Spoilers for all of Paradise Season 1, including the finale. Trent, the community librarian, killed President Cal Bradford. His motive was revenge for the harm suffered by his former construction crew during the building of Paradise’s mountain bunker—not Cal’s investigation into the secretive community. The murder mystery closes, but Xavier leaves the bunker to search for his wife, Teri, after learning she may still be alive.
What is Paradise about?
Created by Dan Fogelman, Paradise premiered on Hulu in January 2025. It begins as a murder investigation: Secret Service agent Xavier Collins finds President Cal Bradford dead in his residence, then becomes a suspect as he tries to discover who killed him. ABC’s series announcement introduces the show as a thriller set in an apparently serene community.

That calm is deceptive. Paradise is a bunker built into a Colorado mountain after a global catastrophe. Its residents live in a controlled community, while Samantha Redmond—known as Sinatra—holds power and has reasons to keep them from understanding the full situation outside. The season shifts from the question of who killed Cal to the larger question of what happened to the world and who was allowed to survive inside the bunker. Hulu’s official series page identifies the show and its creator; its displayed synopsis includes later-season details, so this recap focuses on Season 1.
Why Xavier is a suspect
Xavier’s connection to Cal makes the investigation personal and complicated. He had once taken a bullet for the president, but he also carried resentment toward Cal for failing to save Xavier’s wife, Teri, during the catastrophe. That history gives Xavier a motive others can question, even as he pursues the truth about Cal’s death.

As Xavier investigates, the community’s carefully managed version of events becomes harder to trust. Cal had been looking into Sinatra and the outside world, but that inquiry is not what led to his murder. The finale separates the political secrets surrounding Paradise from the personal grievance behind the killing.
What happened to the world outside Paradise?
Flashbacks reveal a cascading disaster involving climate catastrophe and nuclear escalation. Cal chooses to trigger an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) rather than launch U.S. nuclear weapons. As TIME explains in its Season 1 finale account, the EMP grounds missiles that have already been launched, but it also cuts power and communications.

The bunker is not the only place where people survived. The season reveals that people are living outside, including Teri. Paradise’s residents have been given an incomplete account of the conditions beyond their mountain refuge. How many people survived, and what their lives are like, remain matters of the story rather than established real-world statistics.
Who killed Cal in Paradise?
Trent, the librarian, killed Cal. Before living in Paradise, Trent worked on the mountain bunker construction project. Reporting on the finale says he warned that dangerous conditions threatened his crew, was removed from the project, and later sought revenge after crew members became ill or died. TheWrap’s finale report and TV Insider’s interview about the reveal describe the connection between the crew’s suffering and Trent’s motive.

That distinction matters: Cal’s scrutiny of Sinatra and the outside world creates tension in the season, but it is not Trent’s direct reason for killing him. The murder is an act of revenge rooted in the bunker’s construction and what Trent believes happened to his former crew.
What happens at the end of Paradise Season 1?
Jane shoots Sinatra
Jane shoots Sinatra before Xavier can. The confrontation changes who holds power in Paradise, but it does not resolve everything the community has been kept from knowing.

Presley is alive
The finale confirms that Presley survived. Her survival is an important reveal, separate from the question of who killed Cal.
Xavier leaves to find Teri
Sinatra shows Xavier evidence suggesting Teri may be alive. Xavier leaves Paradise to search for her, while Robinson is left to care for Xavier’s children. The immediate murder case is resolved, but Xavier’s departure leaves the family’s future—and his search—open.
