Cameo sued OpenAI because Sora used “Cameo” as the name of a video feature. The dispute produced a November 2025 temporary restraining order and a February 2026 preliminary injunction—not a final judgment on the trademark claims. OpenAI appealed, and its Sora status page says the product was no longer available as of April 26, 2026; that product change does not establish how the lawsuit or appeal ultimately ended.
What the lawsuit was about
Baron App, doing business as Cameo, sued OpenAI entities in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on October 28, 2025. The court described the case as a trademark infringement and dilution action concerning OpenAI’s use of “Cameo” in connection with its Sora application. The complaint sets out Cameo’s claims; those claims are allegations, not findings that the court had made at the time.
Cameo alleged that consumers might think Sora’s feature was sponsored by or affiliated with the Cameo marketplace, and that the use could harm its brand and business. The court considered possible confusion when it evaluated a request for temporary relief, but the allegations should not be treated as proven facts or as a final decision on liability.
What the judge ordered—and when
November 21, 2025: temporary restraining order
After hearing argument on November 18, Judge Eumi K. Lee issued a temporary restraining order on November 21. It barred OpenAI from using “Cameo” or confusingly similar names—including “Cameos,” “CameoVideo” and “Kameo”—as the name of a product, service, feature or function in Sora AI video-generation products and services, successor video-generation products, and related U.S. marketing, promotional or distribution channels. The order was temporary relief, not a permanent ban or final judgment.
In explaining the request, the court discussed the relationship between the services and the potential for confusion. It noted that some celebrity birthday videos generated with Sora could be difficult for consumers to distinguish from authentic Cameo marketplace videos, and considered that the marks looked and sounded the same in the relevant context. The order stated: “This trademark infringement and dilution action arises out of Plaintiff’s allegedly infringing use of Plaintiff’s federally registered CAMEO® mark in connection with OpenAI’s Sora application.” That was the court’s description of the dispute at the temporary-relief stage, not a final ruling that infringement had occurred. The November 21 opinion also set a process for considering preliminary relief.

February 14, 2026: preliminary injunction
The district-court docket lists an order granting a preliminary injunction and a preliminary-injunction order entered February 14, 2026. The docket records a distinct procedural step after the November TRO. A preliminary injunction is not the same as a permanent injunction or a final merits judgment.
Appeal, Sora’s discontinuation and what remains unresolved
OpenAI filed an appeal in the Ninth Circuit on March 11, 2026. Two days later, the district court stayed case deadlines and proceedings pending appeal. The Ninth Circuit docket page reports that OpenAI filed a motion to voluntarily dismiss its appeal on April 16, 2026, but the cited docket material does not establish the motion’s final disposition or the ultimate merits outcome. The appellate docket page and district-court docket document those procedural events.

OpenAI’s Sora page says Sora was no longer available as of April 26, 2026. That product-status notice is not a court ruling: it does not, by itself, show that the trademark dispute was resolved, that the injunction was vacated, or that either side prevailed. The materials cited here do not establish a final appellate disposition or final decision on the merits.
