Turning an AR7778 Musical Calculator into a MIDI Instrument

Two reported projects turn the AR7778 into a MIDI-triggered instrument: one switches its keypad matrix with optocouplers, while another uses solenoids to press the keys. Both have important limits in note range, timing and build documentation.

You can make an AR7778 play programmed music in two reported ways: electrically emulate its keypad presses with optocouplers, or use solenoids to press the physical keys. The more detailed account uses an Arduino Uno R3, shift registers and a script that turns MIDI note-and-timing events into Arduino playback code. Neither project report is a complete, universally compatible build plan: the calculator’s note range is limited, and its keypad connections and tuning should be checked on the specific unit you have.

Choose how to trigger the calculator

Both approaches make the calculator play by triggering the keys it already uses for notes. The difference is whether the trigger happens inside the calculator’s keypad circuit or through a physical press.

Approach What the controller does Reported hardware and programming Main trade-offs
Direct PCB injection Switches mapped keypad row-and-column connections with optocouplers. An Arduino Uno R3, optocouplers and serial-in parallel-out (SIPO) shift registers; a script converts MIDI note and timing events into Arduino C++ playback code. Requires opening the calculator, mapping and soldering to its board, managing many connections and modifying the case for wire clearance. The described build uses 14 optocouplers per calculator; notes have a fixed duration.
Physical key actuation Uses solenoids to press the calculator’s buttons. A Hackster News report describes an Arduino Nano controlling solenoids through relays, with sequences programmed on the Nano. Avoids soldering into the keypad matrix, but requires mechanical design and accurate key alignment. The report does not give a complete parts list, circuit diagram or repeatable construction details.

The direct method is the better-documented route, not a plug-and-play kit. Choose it if you are comfortable opening electronics and tracing a circuit board. Choose physical actuation if preserving the keypad’s electrical contacts matters more than avoiding mechanical work. In either case, first check whether the calculator’s available notes suit the music you want to play.

Understand the calculator’s musical limits

An April 2026 project account by x86lucario reports that one AR7778 in piano mode plays 14 notes, with a semitone skipped between each available note. The author also found frequency offsets between individual calculators. That means one unit is not a normal chromatic keyboard, and a note number sent by a MIDI sequence does not guarantee that the calculator can play the corresponding pitch.

The same author compared multiple calculators to cover every note across two octaves in the pictured multi-unit setup. Treat that as a result for that build, not a specification for every AR7778 or a promise that any arbitrary group of calculators will provide the same range. Confirm the actual note mapping and tuning of the units you plan to use.

A separate AR7778 sampling project by evnchn describes a range from C4 through B6 with semitones excluded. That page concerns recording calculator sounds for a sample-based web recreation, not the MIDI hardware circuits described here; it is not evidence that a single calculator can play a continuous C4-to-B6 chromatic range.

  • Fixed note length: In the direct PCB build, a note lasts a fixed amount of time even if the key is held longer. MIDI note duration therefore does not translate into an arbitrarily sustained calculator sound in that implementation.
  • Tuning varies: The April 2026 account reports frequency offsets between individual calculators, so a multi-unit arrangement may need its notes checked by ear or measurement rather than assumed to match.
  • Other performance behavior is not established: The project reports do not demonstrate velocity sensitivity, sustain, or a full chromatic keyboard. Do not plan on those features without testing the particular device and circuit.

How the more-documented direct method works

Map the keypad matrix on your own calculator

The April 2026 build account explains that the calculator reads keys as row-and-column connections: pressing a key connects a particular row trace to a column trace. To identify a key’s connection, its author pressed that key and used a multimeter in continuity mode to find which board pads became connected, then soldered wires to the relevant pads.

That mapping is specific to the author’s board. The published account does not establish that every AR7778 revision uses the same board layout or pad positions. Do not copy a pictured pad map as a universal pinout. Identify the contacts on your own unit, record which pair corresponds to each key and verify the mapping before applying power.

Emulate key presses electrically

After mapping the contacts, the reported design uses optocouplers to switch the corresponding row-and-column pairs, reproducing the electrical effect of pressing keys. The described build uses 14 optocouplers per calculator. The optocouplers are the key-switching interface; they do not expand the calculator’s note range or alter its sound generation.

The author used an Arduino Uno R3 and said it was sufficient for the build. Because the design had many optocouplers and limited available Arduino pins, it used daisy-chained SIPO shift registers. The account does not provide a complete, verified bill of materials or a universal schematic, so component choices and wiring need to be checked against the actual implementation rather than inferred from the board names alone.

Translate MIDI events into playback

In the documented workflow, a script reads MIDI note and timing events and emits C++ code for Arduino playback. The Arduino then triggers the mapped calculator keys according to that generated sequence. The author suggests serial communication to firmware that interprets incoming events as a more elegant alternative, but that is a proposed approach, not the described completed workflow.

Whichever software path you use, the note events must be matched to keys the calculator actually has. The source reports a restricted note set and fixed note duration, so ordinary MIDI timing and pitch assumptions may not carry over directly. Test a short sequence using the actual unit before preparing a longer arrangement.

Physical actuation: an alternative without keypad soldering

Hackster News reports that YouTuber igor30 built an AR7778 MIDI instrument with an Arduino Nano, relays and solenoids that push the calculator buttons. The sequences were programmed on the Nano. The report mentions performances of several tunes, but does not publish circuit diagrams, source code, actuator dimensions or ratings, force and travel requirements, or a reproducible bill of materials.

That makes physical actuation a demonstrated alternative rather than a ready-to-follow tutorial. As an engineering matter, a builder would need to determine how to mount each actuator, align it to the intended button, and control its movement without obstructing neighboring keys. Those are design questions to solve for a particular calculator and actuator; the report does not establish tested specifications for them.

Plan the build around its real constraints

Direct wiring involves irreversible case work

For the pictured four-calculator direct-input build, the author cut the rear casing to route wires and removed plastic supporting the LCD to make room, then taped the display to the case. Those modifications are specific to that construction, but they show that the approach can require substantial physical alteration. Decide how wires will exit and how the display will remain supported before cutting; do not assume the conversion will fit inside an unmodified enclosure.

Keep parts tied to the chosen approach

  • For direct PCB injection: the documented account names an Arduino Uno R3, optocouplers, SIPO shift registers and a continuity-mode multimeter for mapping. It implies soldered board connections.
  • For physical actuation: the Hackster News report names an Arduino Nano, relays and solenoids.

These are parts associated with separate reported designs, not a validated shopping list. The sources do not specify exact component models or ratings, nor do they establish current availability or compatibility for a complete build.

Test before committing to a full arrangement

  1. Check the music range: identify the notes available on the calculator you intend to use and compare them with the sequence you want to play.
  2. For direct injection, map the board: use continuity testing to identify the row-and-column contacts for each relevant key on that individual unit. Do not rely on another calculator’s pictured pad positions.
  3. Choose the trigger architecture: plan either the optocoupler-and-shift-register interface or a physical actuator system. The two reports use different controllers and do not amount to interchangeable wiring instructions.
  4. Verify a small test sequence: check that the intended key triggers the intended sound, then check timing and tuning before scaling up to a longer piece or more calculators.
  5. Plan the enclosure and wiring: the reported direct build needed case and display-support changes for wire clearance; a mechanical build instead needs a workable actuator arrangement.

What these project reports do—and do not—establish

The April 2026 x86lucario account gives the clearest description of matrix mapping, optocouplers, shift registers and MIDI-to-Arduino code generation. It documents that author’s hardware, not a universal AR7778 circuit or a fully reproducible tutorial. The Hackster News account is a brief secondary report on the Nano-and-solenoid approach and omits the construction detail needed to reproduce it from the article alone.

Neither account establishes a universal PCB pinout, a complete parts-and-ratings list, or a standard tuning for every calculator. The practical starting point is therefore to verify the notes and connections on your own unit, then treat the chosen project as an architecture to adapt rather than a guaranteed build recipe.
