At least once a month: Netflix recommends opening its app on a device connected to the Wi-Fi at your Netflix Household to help avoid interruptions while you’re away. If Netflix blocks a device during a trip, request a temporary verification code instead. That code expires after 15 minutes; it is not a month-long pass.
How often do you need to connect to your Netflix Household Wi-Fi?
Netflix’s guidance is to open the Netflix app while connected to the Wi-Fi at your Netflix Household at least once a month. Netflix describes this as a way to avoid future interruptions when traveling or on the go. The recommendation is about checking in from the household network; it does not mean a travel code lasts for a month. Netflix’s device-verification help page explains both steps.
What to do if Netflix blocks you while traveling
If a device is flagged as outside the household, Netflix offers a temporary verification flow. The option’s label depends on what you’re watching on:
- TV or TV streaming device: Choose “I’m Traveling” when prompted, then request a temporary code.
- Phone or computer: Choose “Watch Temporarily,” request a code, and enter it in the app or browser.
Netflix sends the code through the account’s email address or, if no email is on file, by text message. Codes expire after 15 minutes. Netflix also limits how many temporary-code requests can be made per device, but its help page does not state one universal request count or reset schedule. See Netflix’s instructions for the verification prompt.

Which account action fits your situation?
| Situation | Netflix’s stated route | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Regular travel or time away from home | Open Netflix on household Wi-Fi at least once a month | A preventive routine intended to help avoid interruptions. |
| A device is blocked during a trip | Choose “I’m Traveling” on a TV or “Watch Temporarily” on a phone or computer, then request a code | Temporary verification; the code expires after 15 minutes. |
| Your household TV or internet connection has changed | Update the Netflix Household from a TV connected to the preferred or most-used internet connection | Refreshes the household association. |
| Someone watches from outside the household on an ongoing basis | That person needs their own account or must be added as an extra member | Netflix’s stated option for continued access outside the household. |
Netflix defines a Household by the devices connected to the internet at the main place where Netflix is watched. It says it uses IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to associate devices with a household, and does not use GPS to determine a device’s precise physical location. Netflix explains what a Household is here.
If Netflix has identified the household incorrectly
Use a TV connected to the internet connection you want to designate as the household’s preferred or most-used connection to update the Netflix Household. If you’re trying to resolve a prompt on a phone or computer, connect that device to the same Wi-Fi as the household TV where appropriate. Netflix’s household-update instructions describe the process.

A travel code is not a way to keep sharing indefinitely
The travel verification flow is for temporary use away from home, not ongoing access for someone outside the account holder’s household. Netflix says people outside the household need their own account or can be added as an extra member. Read Netflix’s Household and sharing guidance.
Household check-ins and temporary codes are also separate from the plan’s simultaneous-screen allowance. Netflix says plans allow one to four screens at once, depending on the plan; that limit does not replace the monthly Wi-Fi recommendation. Netflix’s device guidance covers plan screen limits.
