Prince Harry did not name Princess Diana in his 2024 ESPYS acceptance speech. The line often read as a nod to his late mother came as he acknowledged Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary: “The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.” The connection to Diana is an interpretation of those words, not an explicit mention or confirmed statement of Harry’s intent.
What Prince Harry said about a mother and son
Harry spoke directly to Mary Tillman after recognizing her advocacy for her son’s legacy. In that passage, he said: “The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.” The Invictus Games Foundation’s published transcript does not use Diana’s name or identify Harry’s own mother as the subject of the line.
Because Harry’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, died when he was young, the words can resonate as a personal allusion to her. But the transcript alone establishes only what he said and the context in which he said it: he was addressing Mary Tillman. It does not confirm that he intended a reference to Diana.
Why Harry received the Pat Tillman Award
Harry accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPYS, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on July 11. ESPN’s announcement said the award recognizes someone with a strong connection to sport who serves others in a way that echoes the legacy of Pat Tillman, a former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger.

ESPN cited Harry’s work supporting the veteran community through sport and the Invictus Games Foundation, which he founded. The announcement said he had served ten years in the British Armed Forces, including two tours in Afghanistan. It described the Games at that time as bringing together competitors from 23 nations and offering programming throughout the year; that was ESPN’s 2024 figure, not a current participation count.
What the speech was about
Harry asked Invictus Games presenters and alumni to remain on stage and framed the award as recognition of the service members and families behind the Games. He said: “I stand here not as Prince Harry, Pat Tillman Award recipient, but rather a voice on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation and the thousands of veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who have made the Invictus Games a reality.”

He thanked the Tillman family, then spoke about service personnel, their families, resilience, and unity amid division and conflict. One line captured that theme: “Our community proves that unity is not just possible, but formidable.” He closed on behalf of the Foundation: “No matter the road ahead, we are here for you. We will leave no one behind.”
The debate around the award selection
Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary Tillman, had criticized ESPN’s choice, saying that people working in the veteran community would have been more fitting recipients, according to the Associated Press. The report also says Harry thanked Tillman’s widow, Marie, and acknowledged Mary. In the Foundation transcript, Harry respectfully recognizes Mary’s advocacy for her son’s legacy before delivering the mother-and-son line.

That context matters: the speech’s reference to a mother and son appears in an acknowledgement of Mary Tillman, while its broader focus is the Invictus community and service. The words may carry an additional resonance for listeners who connect them to Diana, but that reading should remain distinct from the speech’s literal wording.
