What happened in January 2024?

In its 17 January statement, Kensington Palace said: “The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery.” It added: “Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.” These were expectations at the time, not confirmed dates for her discharge or return.
Why did Prince William postpone engagements?
Contemporaneous reporting said William postponed some engagements as he supported Catherine and their children. The available announcement does not provide a complete list of the affected appearances, nor does it say that he stopped all public duties for Catherine’s entire recovery.

Catherine also apologized for having to postpone her own upcoming engagements. Kensington Palace said: “The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements.” Her engagements and William’s were separate: she was recovering from surgery, while he postponed some appearances in support of his family.
What surgery did Kate Middleton have?
The palace described the procedure as planned abdominal surgery. Its January announcement did not name the condition or explain the precise reason for the operation. The length of the expected hospital stay or recovery period does not establish a diagnosis, so claims about the specific condition should not be inferred from that announcement.
Rank #2
Contemporaneous reporting said the palace had confirmed the condition was non-cancerous at that time. That report should be understood in the context of what was communicated in January; Catherine later disclosed additional information in March.
How long was Catherine in hospital?
The 17 January statement projected a hospital stay of 10 to 14 days. On 29 January, Kensington Palace confirmed Catherine had returned home to Windsor and was making good progress. The statement did not specify the exact date she left hospital.

What became known later?
On 22 March 2024, Catherine announced that she was undergoing cancer treatment, including preventive chemotherapy. This was a later disclosure, not an explanation given in the palace’s January surgery announcement. The March announcement materially changed what was publicly known, but it should not be retroactively presented as information contained in the January statement.
