Pokémon Legends: Z-A gives Pokémon Center attendants distinct appearances and identities, including a Black attendant whose presence prompted heartfelt responses from some players. The reaction documented online was not unanimous, and “Nurse Joy” is familiar fan shorthand rather than the character’s confirmed in-game name.
Who is the “Black Nurse Joy” in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
The phrase refers to a Black Pokémon Center attendant in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. GameSpot reported after the game’s October 16, 2025 release that its attendants share a hairstyle reminiscent of the anime’s Nurse Joy, but differ in appearance—including skin tone and facial features—and have individual identities. The official Pokémon character page lists named Lumiose City characters, but does not visibly identify these attendants: Pokémon Legends: Z-A character page.

Fans often call Pokémon Center attendants “Nurse Joy,” but the distinction matters: GameSpot notes that Nurse Joy is principally an anime character identity, while the games generally refer to these workers as Pokémon Center staff or clerks. “Black Pokémon Center attendant” is therefore the more precise description; “Black Nurse Joy” is recognizable community shorthand, not a confirmed official name. GameSpot’s report discusses the design change.
Why did the character’s appearance resonate with some players?
For some Black players, seeing a Black character in a familiar Pokémon role had personal significance. In a January 15, 2026 feature, Black Girl Gamers recounts a video by player Jahara Jayde, who says her “childhood self feels so happy,” then adds that her adult self is happy too. The feature frames the moment as validating, connecting the character’s presence to the experience of seeing oneself represented in a series many players have known since childhood.
