Barry Horowitz’s self-congratulatory back-pat and Iron Mike Sharpe’s black forearm brace made them recognizable even when they were booked to lose. That is the paradox at the heart of wrestling’s “jobber”: enhancement performers help make an opponent look formidable, but the role does not mean they lacked skill, professionalism, or a story of their own.

This is a considered, not definitive, top ten. It weighs character recognition, a distinct visual or performance hook, longevity, effective enhancement work, and a career moment that changed expectations. “Jobber” remains familiar fan shorthand; “enhancement talent” or “journeyman” can describe the work more respectfully.

What does enhancement talent mean in wrestling?

Enhancement talent are wrestlers booked to lose so that an opponent can look dominant, dangerous, or ready for a bigger match. The role is part of the storytelling: a convincing performance can make a victory feel meaningful rather than routine.

A loss record alone says little about a performer’s ring knowledge or professionalism. Barry Horowitz, reflecting on the stereotype in a WWE profile, said he knew the business and understood his position, and that he went out and gave all he had. That distinction matters in considering the names below: memorability is not the same as winning, and a supporting role is not proof of incompetence.

Who are the 10 most memorable jobbers in wrestling?

The order is an editorial judgment, not an established historical ranking. It favors a recognizable character or signature, sustained audience exposure, and a clear reason a viewer might remember the performer after the match.

1. Barry Horowitz

Horowitz made losing look like a character rather than a blank spot on a card. His small self-congratulatory pat on the back—often delivered after a brief success or simply as a reminder to himself—became a compact, instantly readable signature.

The signature gained a new meaning when Horowitz upset Bodydonna Skip in 1995. WWE’s profile of Horowitz and its retrospective on wrestlers who paid their dues frame the win as a payoff after a long enhancement role: the performer audiences expected to lose finally got a moment of his own.

2. The Brooklyn Brawler (Steve Lombardi)

Steve Lombardi’s Brooklyn Brawler was memorable because the persona was more specific than “the opponent who loses.” The working-class New York presentation, distinctive gear, and scrappy character gave audiences a clear image to recognize. WWE describes Lombardi’s career as nearly 30 years and notes that the Brawler did not win many matches.

Longevity also came from adaptability. Lombardi appeared in other roles, including Kim Chee, Abe “Knuckleball” Schwartz, and Doink. The Brawler is the defining example of how a recurring enhancement character can become part of a promotion’s familiar landscape; WWE recounts these roles in its journeymen retrospective.

3. Iron Mike Sharpe

Sharpe’s black forearm brace was a potent visual hook. It suggested a hard-hitting, potentially dangerous wrestler before he had thrown a punch, making him easy to remember in a role often built around quick impressions.

His career arc was not simply “jobber from the start.” WWE’s obituary dates his WWE debut to January 1983 and records a challenge for Bob Backlund’s championship in April of that year. A later retrospective describes Sharpe as becoming a heel enhancement wrestler and identifies the brace as central to his persona. Those details make his place on this list about both the striking character and the contrast between an early title challenge and the role many viewers came to associate with him.

4. The Mulkey Brothers (Bill and Randy Mulkey)

Bill and Randy Mulkey are remembered as a duo rather than as individual star characters: a familiar pairing whose television role made opponents’ victories easier to understand. A Bleacher Report retrospective includes them among memorable television jobbers. The available evidence supports their inclusion as a recognizable team, but not a more specific signature moment or detailed career claim here.

5. Lanny Poffo as The Genius

Lanny Poffo’s Genius persona gives this entry a different angle: a sharply defined heel character could still be used in enhancement work. The Sport History Network retrospective identifies Poffo as a recognizable heel jobber when billed as The Genius. That makes him a useful reminder that enhancement talent were not all interchangeable undercard opponents; a distinct gimmick could remain the audience’s lasting impression even when the booking called for a loss.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

6. The Brooklyn Brawler’s fellow recurring roles

This list counts people, not every character they played, so Lombardi’s alternate personas belong with the Brawler rather than as separate entries. Their range nevertheless helps explain why he stands out: one performer could move between markedly different roles while remaining a reliable part of the show. WWE’s account of Lombardi’s career names Kim Chee, Abe “Knuckleball” Schwartz, and Doink among those roles.

7–10. Why this is not a forced roll call

A memorable top ten needs evidence for each name, not just a longer list. The material available for this subject documents strong cases for Horowitz, Lombardi, Sharpe, the Mulkeys, and Poffo, but does not substantiate five more entries with comparable identity, era, promotion, and signature-moment detail. Rather than fill those places with unsupported names, this ranking stays limited to candidates for whom the cited accounts provide a defensible reason for inclusion.

Why did Barry Horowitz pat himself on the back?

It was Horowitz’s signature bit of self-congratulation: a small, repeatable gesture that turned his underdog status into an on-screen personality. Because he was so often presented as someone expected to lose, the pat could read as comic confidence, self-encouragement, or a tiny victory in itself. Its meaning shifted when he beat Skip in 1995; the familiar gesture suddenly belonged to a wrestler who had achieved a genuine upset.

Who was the Brooklyn Brawler?

The Brooklyn Brawler was the ring persona of Steve Lombardi, a recurring WWE performer known for his recognizable New York character and long career. WWE’s retrospective calls Lombardi a journeyman and notes both the Brawler’s uncommon wins and Lombardi’s work in other roles. His story illustrates how repeat appearances and character work can create recognition independent of a conventional run of victories.

Who was Iron Mike Sharpe?

Iron Mike Sharpe was a professional wrestler whose black forearm brace became a defining visual feature. WWE’s obituary places his debut in the promotion in January 1983 and his challenge to Bob Backlund in April. Later accounts associate him with heel enhancement work, but reducing his career to that label misses the early championship chapter and the memorable character detail that made him stand out.

How should memorable enhancement wrestlers be judged?

There is no objective consensus ranking in the cited accounts, and the evidence does not establish a comparable win rate, population size, or cultural-reach figure for enhancement talent. A useful comparison is qualitative:

  • Recognition: Could viewers identify the character or performer?
  • Signature: Was there a gesture, look, or presentation that made the act distinct?
  • Repeat presence: Did longevity or recurring appearances make the character familiar?
  • Storytelling: Did the performer help make an opponent’s victory feel convincing?
  • Expectation shift: Was there an upset or unusual career chapter that changed how audiences saw the performer?

These criteria explain why Horowitz’s back-pat and upset, the Brawler’s longevity and persona, and Sharpe’s brace and early title challenge make strong cases. They also leave room for other candidates when better-documented evidence supports them.
