Pitchfork announced on November 11, 2024, that it would not hold Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago in 2025. The organizer cited a rapidly evolving music-festival landscape, but did not give a more specific reason. The decision ended the festival’s 19-year Chicago run; it did not mean Pitchfork was ending all of its events.
Why was Pitchfork Music Festival canceled?
Pitchfork’s November 11, 2024, statement said: “As the music festival landscape continues to evolve rapidly, we have made the difficult decision not to host Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago in 2025.” That is the public explanation the organizer gave.
The statement did not identify a financial problem, declining attendance, an ownership directive or an operational issue as the cause. Those explanations should not be assumed. WBEZ reported the cancellation amid broader changes at Pitchfork: Condé Nast had announced that the website would be folded into GQ, alongside staff layoffs and a changed editorial scope. That context does not establish that the corporate changes caused the festival decision. Pitchfork’s announcement and WBEZ’s report describe distinct developments.
What does “after 19 years” mean?
Pitchfork described the festival as a 19-year run, while WBEZ reported that it had taken place in Union Park since 2006. The count does not mean 19 consecutive annual editions: the festival was canceled in 2020 during the pandemic. Pitchfork also thanked the City of Chicago, artists, fans, its At Pluto festival team and founder Mike Reed, describing the event as a collaborative part of the city’s arts scene.

Is Pitchfork Music Festival coming back to Chicago?
The November 2024 announcement addressed the 2025 Chicago festival. It does not establish a return date, nor does it rule on every future possibility. Pitchfork said it would continue producing events “in 2025 and beyond,” so the cancellation should not be read as the end of Pitchfork’s other events or of the publication itself.
What did Chicago lose with the festival?
The effects described in local reporting extend beyond the outdoor festival. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Pitchfork aftershows began in 2009, first at nearby Bottom Lounge and later at venues including Metro, Thalia Hall, Sleeping Village, Cobra Lounge, Empty Bottle and The Hideout.

Local bookers described those shows as valuable for bookings, artist exposure, venue revenue and summer programming. Dan Apodaca, senior talent buyer for Lincoln Hall and Schubas, told the Sun-Times: “Pitchfork aftershows were a highlight of our summer calendar and their absence will be felt, especially in a month that is always tougher anyway.” Metro/Smartbar/Gman Tavern owner Joe Shanahan called the cancellation “a loss for small business, for small independent venues,” as well as “a loss of nights since generally those [shows] would sell out.” These are venue representatives’ assessments; the reporting does not provide a quantified economic-impact total. The Sun-Times report includes their comments.

No direct, one-for-one replacement is established. A separate Chicago event may suit some of the same listeners without taking over Pitchfork’s role. Axios Chicago’s 2026 coverage described Warm Love Cool Dreams as appealing to some people missing Pitchfork; it reported that the separate festival drew 6,000 attendees in 2024, citing a spokesperson for Warm Love Cool Dreams. That is not evidence that it replaced Pitchfork or that the festivals have equivalent lineups. Axios’s report discusses the comparison.
