Shyam Benegal said the camera “loved” Smita Patil: it seemed to find and single her out on screen. Away from the film camera, Patil also made photographs herself, her sister has recalled. Those are two different stories—one about her screen presence, the other about a personal photographic practice.

What Shyam Benegal meant by “the camera loved her”

Benegal was describing Patil as an actor, not making a claim about her work as a still photographer. In an account quoted by The Indian Express, he called her instinctive and said: “The camera loved her. The camera looked at her, it picked her out of everyone else. That was the most important thing.” The phrase captures the ease and presence he saw in her performances.

How Patil found her way into films

Patil’s route to acting began at a television station, where she worked as an announcer. In a 1982 interview later published by Manushi, she recalled that Benegal approached her there with an offer to act. She accepted a role in Charandas Chor, then worked with him on Nishant, Manthan and Bhumika.

She later singled out Bhumika as a turning point: “It was with Bhumika that I really came into my own. I felt cinema was my medium, I must act.” Her account makes clear that the camera’s apparent affinity was matched by her own growing conviction that acting was where she belonged.

A career across art-house and mainstream cinema

Patil worked across art-house and mainstream films, in Hindi, Marathi and other regional languages. The Indian Express reported that she had appeared in about 80 films by 1986; that is the outlet’s figure, rather than an independently audited filmography count. Among the titles covered in the available accounts are Charandas Chor, Manthan, Bhumika, Gaman, Umbartha, Arth and Mirch Masala.

The Indian Express also points to women-centered roles in Gaman, Umbartha and Mirch Masala, and reports her interest in direction and scriptwriting. Patil was born on October 17, 1955, and died on December 13, 1986, aged 31, according to the same 2015 account.

Patil’s own photographs, according to her sister

Patil’s interest in the camera extended beyond acting. In a 2025 Filmfare interview, her sister Manya Patil-Seth recalled that Patil used a Nikon F2 to take candid photographs of fellow performers on film sets. Her sister said Patil also learned to develop and print black-and-white negatives in friends’ laboratories.

Patil-Seth also described Through The Eyes of Smita as a curated exhibition of photographs Patil had taken. The account is family testimony about Patil’s photographic practice; it does not establish camera provenance independently or indicate that the exhibition is currently open or that a catalogue is available.
