On 2 October 2015, Perth-born comedian Joel Creasey hosted Stand Up! for Comedy at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth. The sold-out event opened Western Australia’s Mental Health Week with a straightforward aim: raise awareness of mental illness and help reduce stigma—not present comedy as treatment.

What was Stand Up! for Comedy?

The Arts and Culture Trust announced the event on 22 July 2015. Supported by Perth Theatre Trust, the comedy night was scheduled for His Majesty’s Theatre on 2 October to open Mental Health Week, which ran from 2 to 10 October that year. Its announced line-up included Creasey, Andrew Horabin, Ciaran Lyons, Ivan Aristeguieta and other guests. Part proceeds were to go to the WA Association for Mental Health for community mental health.

The week’s stated purpose was to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote mentally healthy communities. Its 2015 message was Act-Belong-Commit. The Western Australian government also reported more than 50 Mental Health Week events and activities statewide; that figure describes the week’s wider program, not this comedy show.

Why did Joel Creasey host the event?

Creasey told the Arts and Culture Trust that depression affected many of his peers in stand-up, and that hosting was a way to give back. “As a stand-up comedian, depression is something which affects so many of my peers. So it’s great to be able to give back in this tiny way,” he said in the 22 July announcement.

In a PerthNow interview published on 29 September 2015, Creasey said he wanted the event to help reduce stigma around depression and anxiety. He hoped it would encourage people to ask one another whether they were okay. He recalled regretting that he had not asked Charlotte Dawson how she was doing during a past conversation, and spoke about how social pressure could leave people suffering in silence. He also objected to mental illness being dismissed as a phase. Those comments describe his perspective in that interview; they are not prevalence findings.

Creasey also challenged the idea that mental illness signals weakness. “The perception is that it’s a weakness — but it’s absolutely not. I think the strongest people in the world are probably dealing with mental health issues,” he told PerthNow. This was his view, not a research conclusion.

What was the event’s reach?

WAAMH’s 2015/2016 annual report, published in 2016, says the show sold out and drew 1,200 attendees, with part proceeds donated to community mental health. The report separately estimated that more than 15,000 people took part in Mental Health Week activities across Western Australia. That statewide estimate covers community events and awareness activities throughout the week, not attendance at the comedy night.

What did Creasey say about getting support?

The PerthNow interview reported that Creasey spoke with a therapist while appearing on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and stayed in contact afterward. He also offered the short encouragement, “Talk to someone.” These are accounts of his personal experience and advice in 2015, not clinical guidance or a general treatment recommendation.

Why the event matters as a mental health story

Stand Up! for Comedy brought a public awareness message into a live entertainment setting: ask how someone is doing, and do not treat mental illness as a personal failing or a passing phase. Its documented significance is as a 2015 stigma-reduction and fundraising event within Mental Health Week. The available accounts do not establish a continuing campaign or current partnership involving Creasey.
