The available record does not establish that Paul McCartney silenced Linda. The allegation stems from a 2007 newspaper report about tapes Linda allegedly made while working on a vegetarian cookbook and a reported payment by Paul to acquire them. The recordings have not been reviewed here, so their contents, any restrictions on publication and their present status remain unverified. Linda was Paul’s wife, not his ex-wife; they married in 1969 and remained married until her death in 1998.

What are the allegations about Linda McCartney’s tapes?

In a March 20, 2007 report, The Independent described tapes recorded by literary agent Peter Cox while he was working with Linda on a vegetarian cookbook. The paper said Linda allegedly discussed her marriage and reported that Paul paid £200,000 for the tapes. Those details are a newspaper’s account of the recordings and a reported transaction, not direct verification of the tapes’ full contents or of a ban on publication. Read The Independent’s report.

The same article quoted Paul as saying: “There are certain things in life that are personal and I think a relationship with a partner is intensely personal, and I prefer to keep it that way.” The quote is reproduced as The Independent reported it from the Today programme; it has not been independently checked against a recording here. It indicates a stated preference for privacy, but by itself does not prove that Paul prevented Linda from speaking or publishing.

Was Linda McCartney Paul’s ex-wife?

No. Linda’s official biography says she and Paul married in London on March 12, 1969. They were still married when Linda died in 1998, so “wife” or “late wife” is accurate; “ex-wife” is not. Her biography describes her as a professional photographer who later joined Wings as keyboard player and vocalist. Linda McCartney’s official biography.

What do Linda and Paul’s public interviews show?

Linda’s 1974 interview

A profile published in Sounds on October 5, 1974, identifies Linda as discussing Wings, an album and a film, and says she takes a close look at her marriage. It is evidence that she spoke publicly about her life and work; it cannot establish what she may or may not have said privately. Read the archived interview.

The joint 1984 Playboy interview

In the 1984 interview, Paul acknowledged Linda had a difficult time after the Beatles’ breakup: “Linda really had a tough time. I didn’t make it easy for her.” Asked about that period, Linda said: “It was frightening beyond belief.” These are their recollections in a joint interview, not independent confirmation of the tape allegations. Read the archived transcript.

Earlier interviews

In an April 1970 Evening Standard interview, Paul described himself as happily married and spoke about Linda and their family. That records what Paul said publicly; it does not reveal Linda’s private feelings or establish whether she faced pressure. Read the archived transcript.

A 1972 Guardian archive interview describes Linda as a member of Wings and quotes her discussing the couple’s business concerns. It adds another example of her speaking publicly, but does not settle what happened to the tapes. Read the interview archive.

What is known—and not known—about whether Linda was silenced?

The public interviews show Linda speaking about her marriage, work and shared business concerns. The later report describes a purchase of tapes and quotes Paul’s preference for keeping a partner relationship private. Those facts can coexist; public interviews do not reveal everything said in private, and the reported purchase does not prove coercion or censorship.

  • Established by the available accounts: The Independent reported that Paul paid £200,000 for tapes allegedly containing Linda’s comments about their marriage.
  • Not established: The recordings’ complete contents, whether Linda intended them for publication, whether a formal publication restriction existed, or what happened to the tapes afterward.
  • Not supported by these sources: A claim that Paul definitively silenced Linda or that the recordings were an unpublished memoir. The report describes recordings made during work on a vegetarian cookbook, not a proven memoir project.

Accordingly, “Paul kept Linda’s recorded account private” is a characterization of the reported transaction and his quoted statement, not a verified legal or historical finding. The available evidence does not justify stating as fact that he silenced her.
