On April 30, 2021, Forbes reported the sale at approximately $250 million, citing sources familiar with the deal. Forbes also reported that Sony declined to comment on the terms and Simon’s representatives did not respond to its requests for comment. The figure should therefore be described as a reported transaction value, not an officially announced price or an estimate of Simon’s present wealth.
Which rights were involved?
Forbes described the deal as covering Simon’s song compositions. It also noted that Sony’s Columbia label continued to own the master recordings of Simon & Garfunkel recordings. Song composition and sound-recording master rights are distinct, so the sale should not be described as a sale of every recording right associated with his music.
