The first reviews of 28 Years Later praised a visually daring, emotionally affecting return to the rage-virus world, but critics did not agree that its family drama, horror, and restless style always fit together. Published around the film’s June 2025 theatrical launch, those reactions describe a sequel that expands the series in striking ways—and sometimes leaves its scares or ending short of expectations.
What is 28 Years Later about?
Set in the world of 28 Days Later, the film follows survivors living in an island community, with a defended causeway connecting them to the mainland. Sony’s official synopsis frames what lies beyond that barrier as a mix of secrets, wonders, and horrors. The story centers on young Spike (Alfie Williams), his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and his bedbound mother Isla (Jodie Comer).
Danny Boyle returns to direct, with Alex Garland back as writer and Anthony Dod Mantle as cinematographer. BFI Sight and Sound critic Henry K. Miller sees the setting as more than a backdrop: the island’s history and religious associations inform a story preoccupied with birth, death, and what people inherit. He describes the film as “a zombie film, just about,” and “far more so a vision of Britain in a future Dark Age that resembles the distant past” in his review for BFI Sight and Sound.
Does it live up to the original?
For many early reviewers, Boyle’s return brought the series’ unruly energy with it, while Garland’s story pushed the franchise into unfamiliar territory. Trace Sauveur of AwardsWatch wrote, “The technology may have advanced, but Boyle’s punk-rock spirit is unchanged.” The Rotten Tomatoes June 18, 2025 first-reviews roundup highlights critics who welcomed the film’s ambition and unexpected choices rather than a simple repeat of the original formula.

That reinvention was not a universal plus. A sequel that broadens the world can also feel like a departure from the horror rhythms viewers expect. The first reviews reflect both readings: an expansion of the series’ ideas for some, and a film whose shifts in emphasis do not always satisfy those looking for a more consistent return to its roots.
Is it scary, or more of a coming-of-age drama?
The emotional story is one of the film’s most consistently praised elements, particularly Spike’s journey and Williams’s performance. Julian Roman of MovieWeb wrote, “Williams is remarkable in his feature debut.” Kaitlyn Booth of Bleeding Cool found the balance tilted toward drama: “In the classical sense, this doesn’t feel like a horror movie, but more of a coming-of-age story”.

That emphasis can make the scares feel secondary. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup presents the early consensus as “more moving than scary,” while also recording critics who found the horror limited. For viewers who value character and family relationships as much as infected-world suspense, that tilt may be the point; for those expecting sustained fright, it was a reservation.
How does it look—and do the stylistic choices work?
Visual invention was a major point of praise. Critics singled out the film’s imagery, rapid editing, and punk-inflected energy as evidence that Boyle was not content to revisit the series conventionally. Yet the same intensity could feel distracting when it interrupted the story’s momentum.

Amy Nicholson’s Los Angeles Times review captures that tension. She calls the film “a kooky spectacle” and says it “aggressively cuts from moments of philosophy to violence, from pathos to comedy.” That is an assessment of the movie’s tonal gear changes, not simply a verdict on its technique: the manic approach can heighten its strangeness, but Nicholson also finds the result tonally ungainly.
What divided critics?
The first reviews were broadly interested in the film’s ambition, but several recurring points of friction kept the response from being unanimous:

- Drama versus horror: Some critics saw the family and coming-of-age material as the film’s strongest element; others felt it competed with the horror set pieces. Josh Parham of Next Best Picture wrote, “It often feels like the more interesting personal story clashes with the horror set pieces”.
- Style versus narrative flow: The unusual imagery and fast editing impressed some reviewers, while others found the shifts disruptive or the pacing off.
- World-building: Changes or inconsistencies in the rules of the infected world frustrated some critics, even as others welcomed a sequel willing to take risks.
- The ending: The open ending read to some as a promising setup for what comes next and to others as an unsatisfying cliffhanger.
These are individual critical reactions, not settled facts about how every viewer will respond. The Rotten Tomatoes roundup preserves both the praise for the film’s emotional and visual ambition and the reservations about its execution.
