At the banquet for French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, Anne wore a twisted bun or chignon instead of her familiar bouffant. The change was not a complete departure from her usual styling: the crown remained teased, while the sides were pulled back and twisted into the bun, according to Us Weekly’s July 10, 2025 report.

What does “for the first time in 50 years” mean?
Entertainment coverage used the five-decade phrase to emphasize how much the chignon differed from Anne’s signature look. Us Weekly and E! News’ August 9, 2025 coverage describe the change in those terms, but the reports do not establish an exhaustive record of every hairstyle Anne has worn over that period. It is more precise to call the banquet style a major change to her familiar look after decades.

Us Weekly attributes comments about her usual coiffure to Anne’s 2020 documentary, Princess Royal: Anne at 70. Speaking about how long it took to recreate her hair for The Crown, Anne said: “Actually, I read an article the other day about Netflix and The Crown, but the actress was talking about how long it took them to do their hair like I did. And I’m thinking, ‘How could you possibly take that long?’ I mean, it takes me 10 or 15 minutes.” The comment concerned her regular hairstyle, not the 2025 banquet bun.
