Pot Sounds: Greatest Songs About Weed, From “Sweet Leaf” to “Legalize It”

There is no definitive ranking of songs about weed, but a strong listening list ranges from early jazz and 1970s rock to reggae, hip-hop and country. The key is to distinguish songs that name cannabis from those whose connection rests on an artist’s explanation, coded cues or an audience’s interpretation.

How to read a list of weed songs

“About weed” can mean several different things. Some songs refer to cannabis directly; others have been explained that way by their creators, or acquired the association through sound, context and listeners. Those categories are not interchangeable, and a song’s place on a themed list does not prove what its songwriter intended.

That distinction matters especially for Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35.” Rolling Stone Australia includes it among its 20 greatest weed-themed songs, while also recounting Dylan’s objection to the drug-song interpretation. At a 1966 Royal Albert Hall performance, he reportedly said, “I never have and never will write a drug song.” The same article reports that he later pointed to the Biblical meaning of “stoned.” The song’s cultural association is powerful, but its intended meaning remains contested.

Redman and Method Man’s “How High” offers a different kind of ambiguity. uDiscover Music describes its weed association as coming from smoke sounds and an opening Jimi Hendrix quote rather than an outright cannabis reference. It belongs on a themed playlist through its cues and context, not because every lyric explicitly names the subject.

Starting points across eras and styles

Two editorial selections show how broad the subject can be: Rolling Stone Australia presents 20 songs, while uDiscover Music’s April 20, 2026 feature gathers 52. Together, their selections span jazz, rock, reggae, country, hip-hop, ska and pop. The picks below are listening routes, not an objective ranking.

Song Why it belongs How to understand the connection
“If You’re a Viper” — Fats Waller uDiscover traces the song to gypsy-jazz violinist Stuff Smith in 1937 and notes later versions, including Waller’s. An early jazz entry; the reported history is uDiscover’s account.
“Sweet Leaf” — Black Sabbath Rolling Stone identifies it as the opener of Master of Reality and ranks it first in its own selection. A defining heavy-rock pick on that publication’s list.
“One Toke Over the Line” — Brewer & Shipley Rolling Stone quotes Mike Brewer recalling that the phrase prompted the song, and reports that it reached the Top 10 in spring 1971. A phrase-led song whose chart history is reported by Rolling Stone.
“Got to Get You Into My Life” — The Beatles uDiscover reports Paul McCartney confirmed the song was an ode to weed. The connection rests on the artist explanation as reported by uDiscover.
“Legalize It” — Peter Tosh uDiscover describes it as the clearest call to action for legalization in its selection. A direct political statement rather than a veiled reference.
“How High” — Redman and Method Man uDiscover points to smoke sounds and an opening Hendrix quote. A coded association rather than an explicit lyrical reference, as characterized by uDiscover.
“Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” — Willie Nelson with Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson Rolling Stone calls it a lighthearted novelty song; uDiscover also reads it as existential. Its humor and reflection give the theme a less straightforward tone.
