Is Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness on Switch Online yet?
Yes. Nintendo’s US announcement on March 17, 2026 described Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness as available in the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics catalog. Nintendo Australia had announced on March 2 that the GameCube game would join the service during March.
The Switch Online version is a catalog release of the original Nintendo GameCube game, not a new installment. Nintendo describes its story as a mission to save the Orre region, with Eevee at the player’s side. Nintendo’s March 17 announcement has the current US release details.
What do you need to play it?
- A Nintendo Switch 2 system. Nintendo’s GameCube catalog is exclusive to Switch 2.
- A Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The standard membership alone is not the stated requirement for this catalog.
- Access to the service in your region. Nintendo notes that Nintendo Switch Online is not available in all countries; check your local Nintendo page for availability and pricing.
Nintendo’s US game listing calls the catalog title’s “Regular Price” free. That means there is no separate catalog purchase price listed; it does not mean the required Expansion Pack membership is free. Subscription terms and pricing can vary by region.

Can you transfer Pokémon from Game Boy Advance games?
No. Nintendo explicitly warns: “Please note that you will not be able to transfer Pokémon from Game Boy Advance titles to this title.” That limitation applies to the Switch 2 catalog version described in Nintendo’s March 17, 2026 US announcement; do not assume that Pokémon from older Game Boy Advance games can be brought into it.
Do you need a GameCube controller?
No controller requirement is stated in Nintendo’s announcement. Nintendo’s GameCube Classics catalog page identifies a wireless Nintendo GameCube controller as an accessory, so it is an optional choice for players who prefer that style of control, not a prerequisite established for playing the game. What was announced before the release?
Nintendo Australia first gave a March 2026 arrival window on Pokémon Day, March 2. Its announcement said the title would join Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack “this March – only on Nintendo Switch 2.” The later US announcement on March 17 confirmed that it was available. Nintendo Australia’s Pokémon Day article records the earlier announcement.
