Their story has included years of shared outings, a stretch apart after Paulson moved to Los Angeles, renewed closeness, and decades of cheering on each other’s work. They have not settled on exactly where they first met.
1993: A New York meeting, with no agreed-upon meet-cute
Pascal has recalled meeting Paulson during his first month in New York, when they were both 18. In their April 2024 Interview conversation, however, Paulson said she did not remember exactly where they met. The year and city are part of Pascal’s recollection; a specific location is not established.
They encountered each other through a wider circle of young actors. Pascal has described joining Paulson’s group through his first friend at NYU, who had gone to school with her. Their early friendship took shape among people pursuing acting, rather than in a single, definitively recalled first encounter.
Their early years: movies, plays, and watching Paulson’s career take off
The group spent time watching movies and seeing plays while hoping to make careers in acting. In a 2014 conversation quoted by Vanity Fair, Pascal remembered that he and Paulson were especially excited to spot Woody Harrelson after seeing Fearless.

Paulson’s career began gathering momentum early. Vanity Fair notes her Broadway debut and a Law & Order episode in 1994. Pascal later described watching her success as seeing a “rocket” take off.
Late 1990s and early 2000s: distance, then a second chapter
After Paulson moved to Los Angeles, the two lost touch for a few years. Pascal later moved between Los Angeles and New York, and he described their renewed closeness as a second chapter in the friendship. The accounts establish a period apart and a reconnection, but do not give precise dates for either transition.

Pascal’s early-career struggles: Paulson’s practical support
Paulson has said that during financially difficult stretches, she sometimes gave Pascal her per diem from a job so he could afford food. Vanity Fair also reports that in 2013 she asked their mutual friend Amanda Peet to pass Pascal’s Game of Thrones audition tape to Peet’s husband, showrunner David Benioff.
Those are two distinct forms of support: direct help with day-to-day expenses and help getting an audition tape to a key person on the show. The reporting supports Paulson’s role in forwarding the tape; it does not establish that she secured Pascal the part.

2005–2016: occasional public appearances and a filmed conversation
Their friendship was largely personal, but several public moments are on record. Us Weekly lists their appearance at the New York premiere of Absurd Person Singular in October 2005. In 2014, Paulson interviewed Pascal for Interview; they attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards together in January 2016, according to Us Weekly.
2019: Paulson celebrates Pascal’s Broadway debut
When Pascal made his Broadway debut in April 2019, Paulson publicly celebrated the occasion. Us Weekly reported that she said she was in awe of him and that witnessing the debut was extraordinarily moving.

2023: Paulson joins Pascal’s Saturday Night Live debut
Paulson flew to New York to appear in a sketch during Pascal’s February 2023 Saturday Night Live debut, then stayed to celebrate with him, Vanity Fair reports. She later described the night as watching his life begin.

In their April 2024 Interview conversation, the two revisited their long friendship, teased one another, and discussed the possibility of working together. Pascal praised Paulson’s stage performance: “My friend is doing eight fucking shows a week and giving one of the best performances I’ve seen onstage.” Paulson answered, “I want to work with you desperately.”

2025: London support and sibling-like banter
July: together at Evita opening night
Pascal and Paulson attended Evita’s opening night in London in July 2025. Vanity Fair described affectionate gestures on the red carpet and framed the appearance as part of their three-decade friendship. Paulson also reflected on Pascal to the magazine: “No one was more fun.”
November: Paulson calls him a brother
On Watch What Happens Live in November 2025, Paulson jokingly called Pascal a “bitch baby” before adding, “We’re brother and sister,” Us Weekly reported. The exchange was playful banter about a close friendship, not a claim of a family relationship.
What the timeline shows
Pascal and Paulson’s relationship has lasted through the uncertain beginnings of their acting careers, time apart, and their later success. Public accounts document concrete acts of support in both directions: Paulson helped Pascal during lean years and celebrated major career moments, while Pascal has praised her work onstage. The exact place they first met remains unclear, but the New York origin and long friendship are consistent across their recollections and reported appearances.
