Peking Duk’s Reuben Styles recounted falling during a 2023 supermarket Christmas party performance, hitting his head on a stage light, then getting up and continuing the show. In an interview reported by PerthNow in October 2024, Styles and bandmate Adam Hyde also shared their views on streaming platforms, festivals and why audiences should support local acts at small gigs. Their comments are personal perspectives, not an independent assessment of the Australian music industry.
What happened when Reuben Styles fell on stage?
Styles said the fall happened at a supermarket Christmas party the previous year. Because PerthNow published its report on 11 October 2024, the report’s wording places the performance in 2023. Styles recalled hitting his head on a light and staying down briefly before getting up and carrying on with the performance. As he put it, “I hit my head on a light.” PerthNow’s interview report does not provide a medical diagnosis or establish the severity of the injury.
What did Peking Duk say about the Australian music industry?
Styles said globalisation and services such as Spotify and TikTok had changed conditions for Australian musicians. He also acknowledged that the platforms can help people succeed through music, calling that outcome positive. Hyde, meanwhile, said festivals were closing because they were no longer feasible.
These were the musicians’ views in a conversational interview, not findings from an industry-wide study. The report does not provide data on festival closures, financial pressures or the effects of streaming and social media, so their comments should not be read as a measured account of the entire Australian music sector.

Why did they encourage fans to attend small gigs?
Styles urged young Australian music fans to go to small venues and see local acts, including rock bands. Hyde emphasized the distinctive experience of an intimate live show. Their appeal was about the value of seeing artists perform in a room, rather than relying only on music discovered through digital platforms.
What happened to the debut album mentioned in 2024?
PerthNow’s 2024 report said Peking Duk were preparing a debut album, but no release date had been announced at that point. A later Rolling Stone Australia feature published in August 2026 identifies the debut album as Paradise. That later article establishes the album’s name; it does not verify physical-edition availability or a current retailer listing.
