Her answers were more complicated than the headlines: she criticized the separation of migrant children from their parents while declining to join an anti-Trump campaign, and said she had once thought retirement was a good idea but had changed her mind.
What Nicki Minaj said about Trump in 2020
During a keynote conversation with her manager, Irving Azoff, Minaj said she was not going to join the anti-Trump bandwagon. But she also described the separation of children from their parents at the U.S. border as deeply troubling. She connected that reaction to her own experience of coming to America as an immigrant child fleeing poverty, saying that separating a child from the person who provides comfort did not sit right with her.

She also joked that Trump had been funny on Celebrity Apprentice. Both parts of the answer matter: her remarks combined a specific objection to family separation with a lighthearted comment about his television persona. They were made in 2020 and should not be read as a description of her current political position.
Later developments are distinct from that conversation. In May 2026, Variety reported that Minaj had publicly supported Trump and the Republican Party and discussed her reasons in an interview with Time. That report came after PolitiFact’s October 2024 fact-check, which found no public evidence that she had endorsed Trump for the 2024 election. PolitiFact’s finding was about that election period; it does not negate the later reporting.

Why she regretted posting impulsively
Minaj described sometimes posting in the heat of the moment and regretting it minutes later. As recounted by KSPN/Always Mountain Time’s account of the conversation, attributed to Rolling Stone, she joked that she had been hacked before acknowledging that some posts were impulsive. She said she would soon ask herself why she had done it, tell herself she had played herself, and recognize that she needed to learn to control anger and emotion.
The discussion came amid a renewed dispute with former partner Meek Mill. The recap described allegations and counter-allegations from the two; those claims should be understood as statements by the people involved, not as independently established facts.

Minaj also linked her reflections to time away from social media. She said she had spent three months without it on her phone, had recently reinstalled it and was considering removing it again. She warned that social media could encourage comparison and leave people feeling depressed, describing it as a tool that could be either a best friend or a worst nightmare. Those were her personal observations, not clinical claims.
What other regrets she mentioned
The regrets were not limited to social-media posts or career decisions. In the conversation, Minaj said she wished she had never recorded “Anaconda,” “Your Love” and “Starships,” while distinguishing her feelings about the “Anaconda” song from her positive view of its video. She also said she wished she had contributed to Beyoncé’s “Sorry.”

Did Nicki Minaj retire?
Minaj’s retirement announcement was real, but her view changed. On September 5, 2019, she tweeted that she had decided to retire and have her family. The next day, she deleted the post and apologized for delivering the news abruptly and insensitively. As The Washington Post reported, that apology did not clearly establish that she had abandoned the plan.
In an October 2019 interview summarized by The FADER, Minaj said she had already recorded music that would still be released. She explained that the tweet mainly reflected uncertainty about whether she wanted to return to recording a fifth album, and said she had not anticipated the reaction. She deleted it because it felt insensitive to fans. At that point, whether she was retiring remained unclear.

By the February 2020 Pollstar Live conversation, Minaj said she had genuinely thought for a while that retirement was a good idea, but no longer did. That sequence makes “reconsidered” more accurate than calling the announcement a hoax or saying she never meant it.
