Its images make darkness feel tangible, while Lily-Rose Depp’s Ellen and Bill Skarsgård’s Orlok give the horror a charged, intimate center. The result is beautiful and often disturbing—though its heightened dialogue and melodrama may strike some viewers as overdone.
What is Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu?
Released in the United States on December 25, 2024, Nosferatu is writer-director Robert Eggers’s reimagining of the vampire tale. Bill Skarsgård plays Count Orlok; Lily-Rose Depp plays Ellen. The ensemble also includes Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. Focus Features describes the film as a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and a vampire infatuated with her. Focus Features’ release announcement and its official film page establish that premise and cast.
Is Nosferatu erotic?
Yes, in the sense that desire is woven into the film’s dread rather than set apart from it. Ellen and Orlok’s connection is not simply a conventional romance; the attraction is bound up with fear, compulsion, and the threat of violation. That tension gives the vampire story a psychological intimacy: the danger is not only that Orlok may reach Ellen, but that the pull between them makes his presence feel difficult to dismiss.
Eggers has emphasized this psychosexual dimension as part of his interpretation of the material. In a TIME interview, he discussed the charged connection between Ellen and Orlok; it is best understood as a distinctive choice in this version, not a definitive reading of every adaptation. The film’s eroticism is inseparable from its menace, which is why the sensual moments can feel disturbing rather than inviting.

How does this version relate to earlier vampire stories?
Eggers draws on F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and vampire folklore. Rather than treating the story as a mystery about what a vampire is, he puts more weight on how the familiar legend can be made vivid again—and on the relationship between Ellen and Orlok. In an interview with RogerEbert.com, Eggers discusses the film’s inheritance from those sources.
That lineage makes Ellen’s agency and the film’s treatment of her connection to Orlok useful points of comparison with earlier versions. The new film gives that connection unusual emphasis, but its artistic choices do not establish that it is categorically better than its predecessors. Its strongest claim is that a well-known vampire story can still feel strange when its atmosphere and emotional focus are made central.

What makes the film’s atmosphere work?
The visual design is one of the film’s clearest strengths. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke builds a world in which darkness is not just a backdrop: it shapes what can be seen, what remains uncertain, and how much dread an image can hold. The period setting and carefully constructed compositions help the supernatural story feel rooted in a physical place.
Blaschke described the film’s approach in a Focus Features interview: “This is a story that people have seen many times, so the movie isn’t so much about the ‘what’ as the ‘how.’” That idea explains the film’s priority. Its force often comes less from surprising plot turns than from how the familiar material is staged, lit, and made to feel oppressive.

Does the drama always match the imagery?
Not necessarily. The same stylization that gives the film its theatrical, old-world atmosphere can make some dialogue feel mannered, and its heightened emotional register can tip into melodrama. The Associated Press review, published December 23, 2024, praises the period world while criticizing the stylized dialogue and overdone dramatic storytelling. Those are matters of critical response, not settled facts about how every viewer will experience the film; they identify the main tension in its approach.
For viewers who enjoy horror that commits fully to its own formal language, the heightened performances and dramatic intensity may add to the spell. Those looking for naturalistic conversation or restrained storytelling may find the same choices distracting. The images can be more persuasive than the dialogue, but that imbalance is part of the experience rather than a reason to mistake the film for a straightforward, plot-first thriller.

Is Nosferatu scary?
It is designed to unsettle through atmosphere, bodily menace, and the collision of beauty with violence, rather than relying only on sudden shocks. The erotic tension contributes to the unease: desire does not soften the threat but makes it more intimate. Viewers sensitive to graphic material should know that the Associated Press review reports an R rating for bloody violent content, graphic nudity, and some sexual content. Consult the rating authority’s listing for formal rating language.
Is Nosferatu worth watching?
It is worth watching if you want a visually deliberate gothic horror film that approaches a familiar vampire myth through obsession, sensuality, and dread. Its imagery and period atmosphere are more consistently compelling than its dialogue and dramatic construction, so viewers who prioritize those elements may have a more mixed response.
