Fact-checkers traced the story to The Sports Memery, a satire page.
Where the dog story came from
The Sports Memery posted the story on Facebook on August 1, 2024, according to Lead Stories’ August 6 fact-check. Lead Stories reported that a satire disclaimer was added on August 3, after copies of the post had begun circulating without that context. Taiwan FactCheck Center and Factcheck Lab also concluded that the viral account was satire, not a genuine report or quote.
The post’s invented backstory described Dikeç as a mechanic who took up shooting because of a divorce and attributed to him the line, “Sharon, if you’re watching this, I want my dog back.” That wording belongs to the satirical story; fact-checkers found no evidence that Dikeç said it to reporters or from the Olympic podium. Their reviews do not establish private details about whether he has an ex-wife named Sharon or a dog.
What is known about Dikeç’s shooting career and medal
The divorce-triggered origin story does not match the career account described in the fact-checks. They report that Dikeç began shooting in 2001 after joining the Turkish Gendarmerie. At Paris 2024, he won silver with Şevval İlayda Tarhan in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Factcheck Lab’s August 7 report covers both the satire claim and the Olympic result; Lead Stories addresses the shooting-career account.

The Taiwan FactCheck Center labeled the claim false in a report published August 5, 2024. Lead Stories published its fact-check on August 6, and Factcheck Lab reached the same conclusion on August 7. Their reporting traces the viral tale to a satirical source rather than a verified interview or Olympic statement.
