No official AO3 material cited here says the archive is shutting down. An April 2, 2026 announcement was about leaving open beta and said work on the site would continue. That is evidence of AO3’s publicly stated status at that time, not a guarantee about its indefinite future.
Why people may think AO3 is closing
AO3’s April 2, 2026 announcement discussed the archive exiting open beta. It described the change as mostly cosmetic, not as a closure or the end of development. The announcement also said volunteer coders and community contributors would keep improving the site.
AO3 reported 10 million registered users and 17 million fanworks in that announcement. Those are figures published by AO3 on April 2, 2026, not verified current totals.
What to do if AO3 is unavailable
A site that is temporarily down, slow, or difficult to reach is not, by itself, evidence that it is closing. AO3’s Known Issues page, updated March 20, 2026, directs users to its status page and official social accounts for information about temporary service problems. Check those official channels for current conditions; a dated article cannot confirm whether the archive is reachable right now.

How AO3 is funded
AO3’s About the Archive FAQ describes it as a nonprofit, noncommercial archive. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) owns its servers and funds the archive through donations; users do not pay to use AO3, and the site has no advertisements. AO3’s Terms of Service FAQ also says it does not sell products, advertising space, or user data to third parties.
