Maika Monroe’s first look at Nicolas Cage in full Longlegs makeup came during their shared interrogation scene—and she said the reveal genuinely shocked and disturbed her. Director Osgood Perkins had helped preserve that reaction by keeping the actors apart and concealing Cage’s appearance until they filmed the scene.
Why Maika Monroe had not seen Cage in makeup
Monroe told Harper’s Bazaar that Perkins raised the idea about a week into filming: she could avoid seeing Cage before their scene together. She agreed. Until then, she said, she had not met or spoken with him, or seen photographs or footage of his full costume.

The separation made the first encounter a real surprise rather than a reaction to makeup she had already studied. Variety likewise reported that the pair were kept apart and rarely shared the screen outside their key interrogation scene near the end of the film (Variety).
What happened when she saw Longlegs
Monroe said the interrogation scene was the first time she saw Cage in character. Her description was: “I was shocked and disturbed…and in awe.” She was also nervous about the scene itself and about acting opposite a performer she admired. Those feelings belong to this first on-set reveal; they do not establish that Cage frightened her throughout production or away from the staged encounter.

The Washington Post reported that the film was shot in Vancouver in winter 2023 and described Perkins’s goal for the meeting as an “absolutely spontaneous, uncontrollable moment” (The Washington Post). That reported intention helps explain why the director withheld the look: Monroe’s response could be immediate because she did not know what she would see.
What the heartbeat story confirms—and what it doesn’t
There is a real production detail behind the heartbeat story. Monroe told Harper’s Bazaar that a microphone was taped to the middle of her chest because her white blouse would otherwise make fabric noise. No one noticed anything unusual during filming, she said; later, a sound editor heard her heartbeat after lowering the audio levels. Monroe summed up the moment: “And my heart was quite literally pounding out of my chest because…well, for so many reasons.”

The often-repeated figure of 170 beats per minute needs more careful wording. It appears in marketing and interview questions, including the framing in Harper’s Bazaar and ELLE’s interview. In the cited account, Monroe explains how the heartbeat was captured but does not independently confirm that an instrument measured a peak of exactly 170 beats per minute. The defensible claim is that her heartbeat was audible in the recording and later noticed in editing—not that the precise promotional number is a verified medical reading.

Longlegs is a 2024 horror film written and directed by Perkins, starring Monroe, Cage, Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt. NEON’s official film page describes an FBI agent pursuing a serial killer through occult clues. Its director called the film “sort of like a horror movie mixtape.”

The surprise makeup reveal supports the headline’s claim that Cage’s appearance unsettled his co-star in the scene. It is not, by itself, evidence that Cage used method acting. Variety’s headline uses that term, but its reporting and Monroe’s first-person account center on the decision to keep the actors apart, her nerves and the concealed reveal.
