One Battle After Another turns revolutionary politics into a volatile family story: its dark comedy and action-thriller momentum make the past feel both absurd and dangerous. This One Battle After Another review finds a film whose strongest argument is that political battles do not end cleanly; they keep shaping the people who survive them and the children who inherit their consequences.

What is One Battle After Another about?

Written, directed, and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film follows Bob, a washed-up revolutionary played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who lives off-grid with his spirited daughter Willa, played by Chase Infiniti. When Bob’s nemesis resurfaces after 16 years and Willa goes missing, he sets out to find her while the costs of his past return with force. Warner Bros.’ official film site also lists Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor among the cast, with music by Jonny Greenwood.

The search gives the story a clear immediate goal, but the film’s reach is larger than a chase. It moves between a revolutionary movement’s earlier years and the uneasy present of its surviving members, asking what remains after the slogans, violence, and youthful certainty have passed.

Does the film make revolution’s aftermath matter?

The Los Angeles Times describes the French 75 as a fictional revolutionary group led in its early period by Perfidia Beverly Hills, played by Teyana Taylor, with Bob among its members. Its account places the story across 16 years, with past actions continuing to shape those who lived through them. The Associated Press characterizes the group as inspired by the Weather Underground and identifies immigration, racism, systemic corruption, and ideological extremism among the film’s themes. Those are critical descriptions of the film’s political field, not a neutral checklist of its meaning.

Anderson’s central move is to make history intimate. Revolution is not merely a backdrop or a set of ideas to debate; it is a force that leaves people with old loyalties, damage, and obligations. The comedy does not erase that cost. It makes the distance between a movement’s grand self-image and its messy human consequences harder to ignore. The satire is most pointed when it exposes how power and conviction can both become performances, without reducing every character to a political symbol.

Do Bob and Willa give the story an emotional center?

Willa’s disappearance turns a sprawling political history into a parent’s urgent search. Bob’s mission is practical and personal, which gives the film a steady line through its jumps in scale and tone. DiCaprio plays a man whose revolutionary past has not made him especially equipped for the present; his scramble to protect his daughter is at once suspenseful and darkly comic.

Infiniti’s Willa is not simply a reason for Bob to move. Her spirited presence gives the family story its own energy, and her relationship with Bob places the consequences of his earlier choices in the foreground. Taylor’s Perfidia and Penn’s Lockjaw occupy sharply different positions in the film’s conflict, adding pressure and volatility to Bob’s search. The performances help the characters remain people, not just representatives of opposing political forces.

How do comedy, action, and political satire work together?

The film shifts among political thriller, action, comedy, and drama rather than settling into one mode. That instability suits a story in which the characters’ past and present keep colliding: absurdity can sit beside danger, and a joke can sharpen rather than release the tension. Jonny Greenwood’s music, credited on the official Warner Bros. site, is part of a film built to carry momentum as well as argument.

The tonal range is also a deliberate risk. Viewers looking for a sober, linear account of a political movement may find the comic detours disruptive; those open to satire will find that the humor gives the story room to puncture its characters’ certainty. For me, the shifts work best when they expose the gap between revolutionary legend and ordinary life, and less as a promise that every consequence will be neatly resolved.

Is One Battle After Another an adaptation of Vineland?

Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland is the film’s clearest literary point of reference, but “inspired by” or “reworks” is more accurate than calling the movie a faithful adaptation. The Los Angeles Times and Associated Press both connect the film to the novel; Los Angeles Times critic Amy Nicholson describes Anderson’s relationship to it as loose and argues that he makes the story his own.

That distinction matters if you are considering the book. Vineland can offer context for the film’s literary lineage, but it is not a required companion, and the connection does not guarantee a matching plot or tone.

Does the ending provide a clear resolution?

Spoiler-light: Nicholson notes that the film does not supply a tidy screen-text accounting of every character’s fate. The resulting openness fits a story about struggle that continues beyond one confrontation, though viewers who want every thread tied off may find the ending less conclusive than they expect.

Who should watch it—and where is it available?

Watch it if you want a politically charged film that is also a restless, funny family-and-search story, and if tonal shifts are part of the appeal rather than a drawback. The Los Angeles Times reports a US R rating for pervasive language, violence, sexual content, and drug use; classification can differ by territory, so check the local rating where you watch.

Warner Bros.’ official site lists a US nationwide theatrical release date of September 26, 2025, and international release beginning September 24, 2025. For a current US digital option, Amazon’s guide, accessed October 8, 2026, lists Prime Video rental for $19.99 and purchase for $24.99; it says renters have 30 days to start and 48 hours to finish once playback begins, and that Prime membership is not required to rent or buy from the store. These are changeable store terms and prices, so check the listing for current price and availability.
