Wano is important to the World Government because it is tied to two things the Government has reason to fear: knowledge of the Void Century and the ancient weapon Pluton. The story shows Government agents pursuing Nico Robin and discussing control of Wano after Kaido’s defeat. It does not confirm a plan to erase Wano from history; that remains a theory, not an established motive.
Why Wano matters beyond its borders
Wano is an isolated country with closed borders and no affiliation with the World Government. Its independence and geography make it unusual, but neither fact proves that the Government has removed Wano from historical records. The stronger explanation for its significance lies in what the country preserves and what lies beneath it.

The Kozuki connection to the Poneglyphs
The Kozuki family is associated with carving the Poneglyphs, durable records that preserve information connected to the Void Century—the period whose history the world has lost. That link makes Wano a place of exceptional historical importance. It also gives the Government a plausible reason to care about the country’s knowledge and the people who can interpret it. This is a summary of the story’s lore, not a direct quotation.
Pluton beneath Wano
Wano is also the location of Pluton, one of the ancient weapons. In chapter 1055, Sukiyaki explains the relationship between the country’s enclosing walls, opening its borders, and releasing the weapon. The walls are not just a symbol of Wano’s isolation: removing them is tied to exposing what lies below. Pluton gives the country strategic significance, but its presence alone does not establish what the Government intends to do with Wano.

What the World Government has actually done
During the events surrounding Kaido’s defeat, Government agents sought Nico Robin and discussed taking control of Wano. The takeover was put on hold while the country’s borders remained closed. Those actions support the conclusion that the Government sees Wano as a place worth controlling and Robin as a person it wants to capture. They do not amount to an explicit order or stated policy to destroy Wano, suppress its name, or erase it from history.
Does the Government want to erase Wano from history?
That claim goes beyond what the story has established. Wano’s Poneglyph history and Pluton make it reasonable to suspect that the Government would want to control access to the country and its secrets. But an interest in controlling a strategic location is not proof of a plan to erase that location from historical memory. The distinction matters: the manga supplies reasons for concern and evidence of attempted intervention, while the specific erasure motive remains speculation.
Rank #2
The most careful reading is that Wano could threaten the Government’s control of both historical knowledge and military power. Whether the Government wants to conceal Wano itself, seize Pluton, prevent information from spreading, or pursue some other objective has not been confirmed in the cited chapters. Because One Piece is ongoing, later story developments could clarify its motives.

Chapters 1053–1055 are the relevant stretch for the Government’s post-Kaido interest in Wano and the country’s borders and Pluton. Chapter 1055 is especially important for the explanation connecting the walls, opening Wano, and the weapon. Readers can find the official chapter catalog at VIZ’s One Piece chapter page.
