Paris turned the Seine and the city’s landmarks into a stage for the Paris 2024 Olympic opening ceremony. The event drew prominent athlete posts and extensive broadcaster attention, but the available sources do not establish a single worldwide count of online posts, views, or audience reactions. “Lights up the internet” captures the event’s online visibility; it is not a measured global social-media result.
A ceremony staged across Paris
Rather than take place inside a stadium, the ceremony unfolded along the Seine—a first in Olympic history, according to the City of Paris. The city describes a six-kilometre route featuring 85 boats and 3,000 dancers, with 300,000 spectators.
That format made the city itself part of the performance: boats carried delegations along the river as familiar Paris landmarks formed the backdrop. The Associated Press reported on the ceremony’s ambitious spectacle amid heavy rain. The City of Paris says beams of light from the Eiffel Tower marked the event’s end, as the cauldron lit by Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner rose into the Paris sky.
What the audience numbers do—and don’t—show
NBCUniversal reported that 28.6 million people watched its U.S. coverage on NBC and Peacock. The company also reported more than 2.5 million viewers for Peacock’s stream. For comparison, NBCUniversal reported 17.9 million viewers for its Tokyo coverage and 26.5 million for Rio.

Those are broadcaster-reported figures for NBCUniversal’s U.S. platforms, not a global television audience or a measure of social-media engagement. NBCUniversal described the event as one of the most ambitious and complex opening ceremonies in Olympic history; that is the broadcaster’s assessment. Its figures and statement appear in the company’s release.
Why the ceremony appeared across social feeds
Athletes shared their excitement, outfits, and behind-the-scenes moments online. NBC Olympics collected examples of those posts, including reactions to the ceremony and the experience of being part of it, in its roundup of athlete reactions.

Online attention was not uniformly celebratory or reliably informative. AFP Factuel documented a wave of misinformation after the ceremony, including decontextualized images and exaggerated claims. Its fact-checking coverage is a useful reminder that a post circulating widely is not necessarily representative of viewers’ reactions or an accurate account of what happened.

At the ceremony, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said athletes were “part of an event that unites the world in peace,” as BBC Sport reported. The river procession gave the event a distinctive city-scale identity, while the rain remained part of the scene documented by the AP.

The evidence supports a clear account of how Paris made the ceremony visually distinctive and how athletes and broadcasters helped bring it to online audiences. It does not support ranking the event’s worldwide internet reach against other ceremonies: that would require comparable, cross-platform engagement data.
