Einstein and the Bomb shifts the focus from the making of the atomic bomb to Albert Einstein’s flight from Nazi Germany, his fear that Germany might build a bomb, and his decision to sign a warning letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It does not uncover Einstein as a bomb builder: the American Institute of Physics says his involvement in the project went no further than signing the letter.
What Einstein and the Bomb covers
Netflix describes Einstein and the Bomb as a BBC Studios docudrama that combines dramatic scenes with archival footage and draws dialogue from Einstein’s speeches, letters, and interviews. Its account follows his 1933 flight from Germany, refuge in England, fears about Nazi Germany, and the decision that connected him to the U.S. government’s response to the possibility of a German atomic bomb. Netflix’s framing puts Einstein’s shift from pacifism toward support for action at the center; that is the film’s narrative approach, not independent verification of every dramatized scene. Netflix Media Center and Netflix Tudum describe its scope.
Netflix’s catalog lists the film as a 2024 documentary with a runtime of 1 hour 17 minutes and credits Aidan McArdle, Andrew Havill, and Rachel Barry among its cast. Runtime and availability can vary by region or change over time; check the Netflix catalog listing for your location.
What Einstein actually did in the bomb effort
In August 1939, physicists including Leo Szilard sought Einstein’s help in alerting Roosevelt to the possibility that Nazi Germany could develop an atomic weapon. Einstein signed a letter drafted by Szilard; a second Einstein–Szilard letter followed in March 1940. The American Institute of Physics’ historical exhibit says Einstein played no other role in the nuclear bomb project. It also notes that he later served as a consultant to the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Ordnance. American Institute of Physics: Einstein and the nuclear bomb

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters: signing a warning letter was a political intervention, not participation in designing, directing, or building the weapon. The AIP exhibit says Einstein’s theoretical work shaped physics broadly, but experimental nuclear physics had little need for his theories in this effort.
Einstein’s regret was retrospective
The AIP exhibit reproduces Einstein’s later explanation: “Because of the danger that Hitler might be the first to have the bomb, I signed a letter to the President which had been drafted by Szilard. Had I known that the fear was not justified, I would not have participated in opening this Pandora’s box, nor would Szilard. For my distrust of governments was not limited to Germany.” This is a retrospective statement, not text from the 1939 letter itself. American Institute of Physics exhibit

Netflix Tudum also quotes the film’s line, “I’ve made one great mistake in my life.” The article presents it as dialogue in the docudrama, so it should not be mistaken for the wording or provenance of Einstein’s historical letter.
How the film differs from Oppenheimer
| Comparison | Einstein and the Bomb | Oppenheimer |
|---|---|---|
| Central figure | Einstein and his exile, warning, and moral reckoning. | J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the bomb project and postwar political conflicts. |
| Narrative emphasis | Prewar flight from Germany, fear of a German bomb, and the letter to Roosevelt. | The bomb project, then Oppenheimer’s policy disputes and 1954 security hearing. |
| Presentation | Netflix describes a docudrama using Einstein’s words, dramatic scenes, and archival footage. | A dramatized feature film; the sources cited here do not establish a full scene-by-scene comparison. |
| Einstein–Oppenheimer encounter | Einstein is the subject rather than a supporting character in Oppenheimer’s story. | The final conversation between Einstein and Oppenheimer is not historical, according to Charles Oppenheimer. |
The useful comparison is about focus, not a claim that one film supplies a definitive account of everything the other omits. Netflix’s documentary spends time on Einstein’s path to the Roosevelt letter and his later moral response. Nolan’s film follows Oppenheimer’s work and postwar conflict. Netflix Tudum characterizes Einstein’s contribution to Oppenheimer’s work as theoretical and indirect; Charles Oppenheimer told TIME that the final conversation in Nolan’s film was effective but fictionalized. What the title’s “left out” claim means
Einstein and the Bomb supplies a different lead character and a different stretch of history: Einstein’s escape from Germany, the warning that he signed, and the moral unease he later expressed about the atomic age. That material is largely outside the focus of a film centered on Oppenheimer. It does not establish a hidden Einstein role in bomb construction, nor does the available evidence support an exhaustive list of scenes or facts that Oppenheimer omitted.
