Territory drew international attention almost immediately after its October 24, 2024 Netflix premiere. On October 30, PerthNow reported 6.4 million views and a number-three position on Netflix’s global English-language TV list. The phrase “Succession in the Outback,” used in coverage, is a comparison—not an official subtitle or Netflix label.
Why was Territory called an international hit?
The label described a dated early audience snapshot, not a claim that the series remains on Netflix’s charts. PerthNow reported on October 30, 2024, that Territory had drawn 6.4 million views since release, ranked third on Netflix’s global Top 10 English TV Shows list, appeared in the Top 10 in 73 countries, and reached number one in eight countries, including Brazil and New Zealand. PerthNow’s October 30 report is the basis for the early “international hit” framing.
A later, different measure appears in the Northern Territory Government’s NT Screen Industry 2025 Achievements report. It says Territory reached number two globally and accumulated more than 112.6 million viewing hours in three months. The report also records number-one positions in nine countries, including Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, Panama and Poland, plus peaks of number four in the United States and number six in the United Kingdom. These later viewing-hour and peak-ranking figures are not a direct update to PerthNow’s October view count or weekly chart snapshot. The 2025 Screen Territory report provides that separate account.
What is Territory about?
Netflix describes Territory as a neo-Western drama about a power struggle over Marianne Station, a fictional cattle property left without an apparent heir. The Lawson family’s generational conflict draws in rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners. Netflix’s series page lists it as a six-episode, 2024 TV-MA series.

The comparison “Succession in the Outback” captures the inheritance and power-struggle angle, but it is media shorthand rather than evidence of an adaptation or official branding. PerthNow also used “Dynasty with Dingoes” as a comparison. The show’s premise and Netflix’s neo-Western description are more precise ways to identify it.
Who made the series, and who is in the cast?
Territory was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies. Its writers include Lee, Kodie Bedford, Steven McGregor and Michaeley O’Brien; Greg McLean directed. Netflix’s listed principal cast includes Anna Torv as Emily Lawson, Michael Dorman as Graham Lawson, Robert Taylor as Colin Lawson, Sam Corlett as Marshall Lawson, Philippa Northeast as Susie Lawson and Clarence Ryan as Nolan Brannock. Netflix’s cast announcement introduced the series ahead of its worldwide release.

Where was Territory filmed?
Netflix announced the production as an Easy Tiger and Ronde production filmed in the Northern Territory and South Australia, with support from Screen Territory and the South Australian Film Corporation. Netflix Tudum identifies Kakadu National Park as one filming location, noting that filming there took place with special permission from Traditional Owners. It also names Tipperary Station, a real working cattle station, and says Anna Creek Station helped inspire the fictional world. Netflix Tudum’s series guide provides the location and background details.
Marianne Station is fictional, not a real visitor attraction. Kakadu’s filming permission does not imply unrestricted access to filming sites, and a working cattle station is not automatically open to visitors. The Top End—the northernmost part of the Northern Territory—includes Darwin, Kakadu, remote Arnhem Land and the Katherine region. Its landscapes differ from the coastal Australian settings more familiar from many screen stories.

What do the cattle-station terms mean?
The language helps explain the show’s setting, but the drama should not be mistaken for a documentary account of pastoral life.
- Station: A large landholding used for livestock. The word once referred to a pastoral property’s main residence and outbuildings; it now generally means the whole holding.
- Grazier or pastoralist: A person who owns or runs a station. Many stations operate on pastoral leases of government land.
- Muster: The rounding up of cattle or sheep. Netflix says mustering in the Northern Territory commonly takes place from March to June and August to November; aircraft may be used in large or scrubby paddocks.
- Ringer: A stock worker who rounds up cattle.
- Mob: A group of livestock being run or mustered together.
Producer and co-creator Ben Davies described the initial creative idea as stories about “people in jeans, boots, and flannel shirts in the Top End,” in Netflix Tudum’s account of the series.
