The horror film behind the headline is The Old Ways, directed by Christopher Alender. Its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score was a critics’ snapshot reported in 2021, based on 16 reviews—not its current rating. Rotten Tomatoes now lists a 97% Tomatometer from 38 reviews and a 46% Popcornmeter from 100+ audience ratings, as accessed October 8, 2026. Netflix availability depends on country.

What is The Old Ways’ Rotten Tomatoes score now?
Rotten Tomatoes’ page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists two different measures: critics’ reviews and audience ratings. The critics’ score has changed since the headline was published, and it should not be confused with the audience figure.
| Measure | Current listing | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Tomatometer | 97% from 38 critics’ reviews | Critics’ reviews listed by Rotten Tomatoes |
| Popcornmeter | 46% from 100+ audience ratings | Audience ratings listed by Rotten Tomatoes |
These platform scores summarize the reviews and ratings counted on Rotten Tomatoes; they do not predict how any one viewer will respond. The site’s critics’ consensus says: “A demonic possession movie with impressive depth, The Old Ways uses familiar genre ingredients to cast a uniquely gripping spell.” Rotten Tomatoes: The Old Ways

What is The Old Ways about?
Mexican American journalist Cristina Lopez is held captive in Veracruz by a bruja who believes Cristina is possessed. The film turns that belief into a fight for survival and for Cristina’s soul. Netflix’s description says: “A reporter visits her birthplace in Veracruz for a story about tribal culture, only to be kidnapped by locals who believe she’s demonically possessed.” Netflix title page
The principal cast includes Brigitte Kali Canales, Andrea Cortés and Julia Vera. Soapbox Films credits Marcos Gabriel as writer and also lists Sal Lopez and AJ Bowen among the cast. Soapbox Films: The Old Ways

Is The Old Ways still on Netflix?
There is no single worldwide answer. Netflix has a title page for the film, and Rotten Tomatoes lists Netflix as a subscription viewing option and gives October 12, 2021 as its streaming release date. But the Netflix page accessed for this article says the title is not currently available in that country. A listing or past streaming release does not establish that it is in every country’s catalog today. Check the Netflix title page for your territory.
Rotten Tomatoes also lists Netflix among viewing options, while JustWatch’s US listing includes digital purchase options and DVD availability at Barnes & Noble. Those listings can change; confirm your country, format and current merchant availability before relying on them. JustWatch US listing

Is the film worth considering?
The clearest way to read the reception is to keep the two Rotten Tomatoes measures separate: critics’ reviews are strongly positive on the current listing, while the audience rating is substantially lower. Neither number is a substitute for deciding whether a possession story set in Veracruz suits your taste. Apple TV independently lists the same director, a 90-minute runtime and the 97% Tomatometer with 38 reviews—37 fresh and one rotten—corroborating the critics’ tally shown there when accessed.
