Its visual grandeur and sympathy for both creator and Creature give the familiar story fresh emotional force, though the film’s 149-minute scale and tendency to spell out its feelings can make the experience feel overextended.
What is Netflix’s Frankenstein about?
Written and directed by del Toro, the film adapts Shelley’s 1818 novel, with Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature. Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, Felix Kammerer, and David Bradley are also in the cast, according to Netflix Tudum. Rather than treating the Creature as a simple monster, the film places the relationship between maker and creation at its emotional center.

The story is divided into a Prelude, “Victor’s Tale,” and “The Creature’s Tale.” That structure takes inspiration from Shelley’s framing device, which begins with a ship captain’s account before turning to Victor and the Creature. The two-part perspective gives the film room to examine not only the act of creation but also what follows when a creator fails to reckon with the life he has made.
How faithful is it to Mary Shelley’s book?
Del Toro keeps Shelley’s creation story as the foundation, but makes clear that his film is an interpretation rather than a page-by-page adaptation. In a Netflix Tudum interview, he said, “I’ve lived with Mary Shelley’s creation all my life. For me, it’s the Bible. But I wanted to make it my own, to sing it back in a different key with a different emotion.”
#1 Best Overall
The film’s emphasis on the bond between Victor and the Creature reflects that approach: the Creature is presented as sensitive and gentle by default, not innately evil, while his capacity for violence is tied to survival. That characterization supports the movie’s focus on empathy and responsibility. Readers looking for a literal screen version of the novel’s every detail should expect changes in emphasis and storytelling instead.
For del Toro, the visual language is part of the reinterpretation. “When [Shelley] wrote Frankenstein, it was not a period piece. It was a modern book, so I didn’t want you to see a pastel-colored period piece,” he told Tudum. The result treats the source as a living story rather than a museum object.

Does del Toro’s gothic style serve the story?
The film’s most immediate pleasure is its crafted world: production design, costumes, and Alexandre Desplat’s score contribute to an imposing gothic atmosphere. The Associated Press review by Lindsey Bahr praised that grandeur alongside the film’s emotional ambition. Here, spectacle is not just decoration; it reinforces the sense of a world shaped by obsession, isolation, and unnatural creation.
That maximalism also has a cost. Bahr found the film exhausting at times and felt some emotional ideas were explained more than necessary. The latter half’s coming-of-age dimension gives the Creature room to develop, but the film’s length and insistence on making its feelings explicit may test viewers who prefer a leaner, more ambiguous version of the tale. These are trade-offs of this film’s particular approach, not evidence of a broader critical consensus.

Should you watch it?
Watch it for del Toro’s distinctive visual imagination and for a Creature portrayed with unusual tenderness. The film’s strongest idea is not simply that Victor creates life, but that creation carries obligations he cannot evade. Its scale, sumptuous design, and emotional seriousness make the familiar story feel personal; its lengthy, sometimes over-explicit storytelling keeps it from feeling as controlled as its finest images.
