Riot co-founder Marc Merrill said the actual creation budget was roughly 60% to 75% of that headline estimate, a broad executive estimate rather than an audited breakdown.
What the $250 million figure includes
The roughly $250 million figure refers to Riot Games’ spending across both seasons of Arcane. The Los Angeles Times reported that it includes production, marketing and an awards campaign, attributing the figure to Riot executive producer Paul Bellezza. It is not a confirmed production-only budget, nor is it a season-by-season total.

The same report said Netflix and Tencent together paid less than half of the reported total. It put Netflix’s payment to Riot at about $3 million per episode and Tencent’s payment for China rights at about $3 million per episode. Those reported distribution payments should not be mistaken for Netflix funding the entire series.
How much was spent on making the series?
Asked by Gizmodo’s io9 to estimate the creation budget, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill said: “It’s somewhere between 60 to 75% of that estimate.” Applied to $250 million, that range works out to about $150 million to $187.5 million. Those dollar amounts are arithmetic based on Merrill’s ballpark; they are not separately published or audited figures.

Merrill also said the “$250 million headline is not even accurate because that includes marketing expenses.” In context, he was distinguishing the overall spending estimate from the cost of creating the show. Neither that interview nor the Los Angeles Times account provides an itemized ledger or a verified cost for each season.
Why a premium animated series can take years to make
Netflix’s production feature on season two, published November 25, 2024, describes a sustained creative process, not a budget accounting. It says the first drawing for season two came just after the series debuted in November 2021, and that a three-year effort brought the finalized vision to life. A design could go through as many as 20 iterations and take three weeks to three months; Fortiche’s creative team peaked at about 450 artists across the United States and France.
Rank #2
Arcane is based on League of Legends. Netflix’s official Tudum feature identifies Christian Linke and Alex Yee as creators and names Fortiche Production and Riot Games in connection with the series. Riot developed and financed the project with Fortiche as its animation partner; Netflix distributed it.

Audience attention and financial return are different measures. The Los Angeles Times reported that a Riot spokesperson said the show itself was not profitable, while season two was on track to be at least break-even. Those statements are company-reported assessments, not audited results published alongside a full accounting.

The same coverage said Riot hoped the series would deepen viewers’ connection to League of Legends, including through digital items, but reported weak conversion of new viewers into sustained players or increased spending, citing people familiar with sign-ups and company activity. Merrill told io9 that bringing viewers into the game was a bonus, not the reason Riot made Arcane; he described the budget as serving creative and audience goals such as hand-crafted animation, voice acting, storyboarding and writing. That explanation gives Riot’s rationale, not an independent verification of costs.
