Yes. Netflix’s 2025 thriller iHostage is inspired by the 22 February 2022 hostage siege at an Apple Store on Leidseplein in Amsterdam. It is a dramatization, not a documentary: the filmmakers fictionalized character names, changed dialogue and compressed the chronology, according to TIME.
What is iHostage about?
Netflix describes iHostage as a thriller about an armed man entering an Amsterdam Apple Store and the police response to the ensuing standoff. The story is told through the perspectives of the perpetrator, hostages and emergency services. The film centers in part on a Bulgarian customer caught in the crisis.
Netflix announced a global premiere for 18 April 2025. Bobby Boermans directed the film, Simon de Waal wrote it, and Horizon Film produced it. The listed cast includes Admir Šehović, Soufiane Moussouli, Loes Haverkort, Marcel Hensema and Emmanuel Ohene Boafo. Netflix’s title page is the place to check current availability; catalogs and language options can vary by region and over time.
What happened during the 2022 siege?
The Amsterdam City Archives dates the hostage action at the Leidseplein Apple Store to 22 February 2022. Contemporaneous reporting by NOS, citing police information, described a 27-year-old armed suspect and a 44-year-old Bulgarian hostage. The suspect demanded €200 million in cryptocurrency, according to Netflix Tudum and TIME’s later accounts.

The standoff lasted about five hours, as reported by TIME and the City Archives. NOS reported that the suspect had firearms and explosive material that was not armed.
The crisis ended when police used a robot to deliver water to the suspect. As the hostage moved to get it, he escaped. The suspect pursued him and was struck by a vehicle belonging to the police’s Dienst Speciale Interventies (DSI). NOS reported this sequence in its account published the following day.

How closely does the film follow the real event?
The central setting and broad crisis are rooted in the 2022 siege, but TIME reports that the filmmakers compressed events, changed dialogue and gave characters fictional names so real people would not be traceable. Netflix says the filmmakers researched what happened inside the store and spoke with people connected to the event. Those steps do not make the film a scene-by-scene factual reconstruction.
