Netflix’s two-part 2024 documentary Can I Tell You A Secret? follows women targeted by Matthew Hardy, whose conduct is more precisely described as online stalking than cyberbullying. A review argues that the series gives only cursory attention to a reported police response to a threat and does not explain Hardy’s motive. That may be the “creepiest aspect” implied by the original headline, but the phrase is an interpretation: the available sources do not establish exactly what it refers to.

What is Can I Tell You A Secret? about?

The limited documentary series examines women’s experiences of being stalked online by Matthew Hardy, the investigation, and how he was brought to justice, according to Netflix’s official synopsis. Netflix’s UK title page lists two episodes, each about 50 minutes long: Netflix UK.

The series centers on Zoe Jade Hallam, Abby Furness, and Lia Marie Hambly. Netflix’s February 2024 backgrounder says Hardy posed as people the women knew on social media and used fake profiles to spread lies that damaged relationships. The Guardian’s review also describes impersonation and fake profiles used to send sexual content into victims’ social circles and spread rumors: The Guardian.

Who is Matthew Hardy, and how many women did he stalk?

Hardy was the online stalker at the center of the series. Netflix’s 2024 backgrounder estimates that he stalked more than 62 women between 2011 and 2022. It also reports ten earlier arrests on charges related to impersonation and stalking. Those figures are Netflix’s account, not an independently verified court count.

Netflix described Hardy’s sentence in early 2022 as the longest custodial sentence in British history for online stalking. That is the broadcaster’s characterization at the time, not a current, independently checked record. A 2022 Guardian podcast announcement said his online stalking had lasted over a decade and reported that Cheshire police believed the sentence was the longest ever awarded for a stalking offence at that time: The Guardian.

What did the documentary leave out?

The Standard’s review argues that the series compresses a complex story and gives only cursory attention to an incident in which Abby Furness reportedly received a threat, police allegedly declined to attend, and she was told the threats were not serious. The review also says the documentary touches on Hardy’s background without explaining why he acted: The Standard.

These are criticisms of the documentary’s treatment, not a complete independent account of the police response or Hardy’s motives. The Guardian’s review focuses more broadly on the gendered context of online stalking and the harm caused by impersonation, rather than resolving those questions.

Why did police take so long to act?

The sources cited here do not establish a complete timeline or explain why police responses unfolded as they did. The Standard review identifies one reported response to a threat as receiving little screen time, but that criticism alone cannot answer what happened across the investigation or why. It is safer to distinguish the documentary’s limited treatment of the issue from a definitive finding about the police investigation.

The Independent’s feature includes a participant’s view that conduct labeled “cyber” is often taken less seriously than physical conduct. That is an interviewee’s observation, not a measured statistic or a finding about every officer involved in this case: The Independent.

What does “the creepiest aspect” mean?

The phrase is a headline judgment, not a fact established by the cited reporting. It could point to the reported treatment of Abby’s threat, the documentary’s unresolved question of motive, or the broader way impersonation was used to destabilize victims’ relationships. The sources do not verify which one the headline intended, so none should be presented as the definitive answer.

What is clear is that the case involved more than unwanted messages: the accounts describe false identities and social manipulation that reached victims’ friends and partners. The documentary tells part of that story through three women’s experiences, while reviewers differ in emphasis over what its limited running time leaves thin.
