Neil Young first said on 2 January 2025 that he and his band, the Chrome Hearts, would not play Glastonbury. The next day he reversed course, saying an error in information he had received had prompted the decision. Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis welcomed him as a Pyramid Stage headliner. The later question of whether the performance would be televised was separate: the BBC ultimately confirmed a live UK broadcast on 28 June.
Why did Neil Young initially pull out of Glastonbury?
On 2 January 2025, Young announced that he and the Chrome Hearts would not play the festival. In the statement reported by the BBC, he objected to the BBC’s involvement, describing it as “corporate control,” and said Glastonbury was not as he remembered it. Those were Young’s views about the arrangement, not an independently established account of the festival’s governance.
The BBC had been Glastonbury’s exclusive broadcast partner since 1997, according to BBC reporting. Young’s objections concerned that relationship; the available reporting does not establish that the BBC partnership was the only factor behind his initial decision.
What changed his mind?
On 3 January, Young said the withdrawal had followed “an error in the information received.” He added that Glastonbury was back on the band’s itinerary and that they looked forward to playing, as reported by the BBC. The report does not identify the error, so its precise nature is unknown.

That same day, Eavis welcomed the reversal, saying: “We can’t wait to welcome him back here to headline the Pyramid in June,” according to the BBC. Her statement confirmed the planned headline slot; it did not explain what information Young had received incorrectly.
Was Neil Young’s Glastonbury set shown on TV?
Yes. The booking reversal in January and the broadcast decision were distinct developments. The BBC had earlier said the set would not be broadcast live at Young’s request. On 28 June 2025, RTÉ reported, citing a BBC spokesperson, that the headline set would be shown live to audiences across the UK: “We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young’s headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC.” RTÉ’s report records that later change; it does not alter the January account of why Young agreed to play.

How does the 2009 broadcast history fit in?
The earlier BBC coverage helps explain why broadcast rights and Young’s festival appearance were separate issues. The BBC reported that only five songs from Young’s 2009 Glastonbury performance were cleared to be shown. That limited clearance is a detail about the earlier set, not evidence about the terms or permissions for his 2025 performance. BBC reporting

The 2025 performance is a past event. Glastonbury’s official information page says the festival is taking a fallow year in 2026 and is due to return to Worthy Farm from 23 to 27 June 2027. The page also identifies the BBC as the exclusive multimedia broadcast partner for specified stages. Those current details provide context for the festival’s schedule and broadcast arrangement; they do not change the chronology of Young’s 2025 booking and broadcast decisions.
