Hurwitz and Schlossberg were also reportedly in talks to direct. That is a report of negotiations—not confirmation of a greenlight, active production, or a release date.
What was reported about the new Knight Rider movie?
The Hollywood Reporter reported on August 26, 2025, that Universal Pictures was in talks with Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald about a feature film based on Knight Rider. A secondary IMDb news listing carried the report. On August 27, Sada Elbalad published an account with additional production details. These are trade and media reports, not an official announcement from Universal.
The reported roles were:
- Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald: reportedly in talks to write and produce.
- Hurwitz and Schlossberg: additionally reported to be in talks to direct.
- Producers and production companies named in the coverage: Counterbalance Entertainment; 87North, represented by Kelly McCormick and David Leitch; and Spyglass, represented by Gary Barber and Chris Stone.
The reports do not establish that the parties finalized a deal or that Universal approved the film for production.
Is the new Knight Rider movie actually happening?
The careful answer is that a feature was reported to be in development discussions; the available reporting does not confirm that it moved into production. As of October 8, 2026, the sources reviewed here do not establish whether talks continued, a script was completed, or filming began. A more recently crawled GeekTyrant article also described the project as in development, but it supplied no new confirmed milestone or visible publication date.

Important story and casting decisions remain unestablished:
- The plot and the movie’s relationship to the original series or later revivals.
- Whether it will reboot the franchise or continue an existing continuity.
- The cast, including whether David Hasselhoff will participate.
- A final agreement, production start, or release date.
The August 2025 coverage said story details were under wraps and did not resolve whether the film would reset the timeline. The production companies and roles above should therefore be understood as details reported during talks, not a guarantee that every participant is attached to a finished film.

How the proposal connects to the original Knight Rider
The NBC series Knight Rider, created by Glen A. Larson, aired from 1982 to 1986. David Hasselhoff starred as Michael Knight, a detective who became an agent of FLAG—the Foundation for Law and Government. His partner was KITT, a modified, artificially intelligent Trans Am. Together, they confronted criminals operating above the law.
The franchise also had television-movie continuations and a 2008 NBC revival. Their existence provides context for the property, but nothing in the new-film reporting establishes that the proposed feature will follow any of those continuities.
