Season 5 is the fifth and final season of the original series; the new projects expand the franchise rather than continue that show’s season-by-season story.
What Netflix is adding to the Stranger Things universe
Netflix’s December 2025 franchise announcement lists several ways to revisit the world of Hawkins, from screen stories to live and physical experiences.
| Offering | Format and story connection | How to access it |
|---|---|---|
| Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 | Animated series set between Seasons 2 and 3, featuring familiar characters and new monsters. | Season 1 is streaming on Netflix; Netflix says the series has been renewed for a second season. |
| Stranger Things: The First Shadow | Stage play Netflix describes as a fresh story rooted in the show’s mythology. | Live theater; Netflix has reported productions in London’s West End and an extended Broadway run in New York. Check the official production listings for current dates and tickets. |
| Books | Official books offer another format for engaging with the franchise; Netflix has also announced a deluxe book with interviews and photos. | Printed publications; specific titles and current availability vary. |
| Immersive experiences | In-person experiences based on the franchise, including Stranger Things: The Experience, Stranger Things: Escape the Dark, and an announced Netflix House experience. | Venue-based; check current location and availability. |
| Games and merchandise | Netflix names special-edition dice sets and an official Hellfire Club Dungeons & Dragons game among its franchise offerings. | Physical products; availability depends on the product and retailer. |
Is Tales From ’85 a sequel to Season 5?
No. Netflix places Tales From ’85 between Seasons 2 and 3, so it is a story from earlier in the original series’ timeline—not a continuation after the Season 5 finale. Netflix describes it as a new paranormal mystery with familiar characters and new monsters. The showrunner, Eric Robles, says the seasons are connected: “They’re very much connected [to each other],” he explains.
Netflix’s series update says Season 1 is streaming and reports a renewal for Season 2. It also says the seasons’ stories connect to one another.

What is The First Shadow about?
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stage play, not a new television season. Netflix calls it a fresh story rooted in the series’ mythology. Its stage format makes it distinct from Tales From ’85, which is an animated series available to stream.
Netflix’s announcement reports the play in London’s West End and an extended Broadway run in New York. Performance schedules and ticket availability can change, so consult the production’s current listings before making plans.

What happened in Season 5?
Netflix calls Season 5 the fifth and final season of the original series. Its official synopsis sets the story in fall 1987: Hawkins is scarred by the Rifts, a military quarantine has been imposed on the town, Vecna is missing, and the group prepares for a final battle.
That ending point matters when describing the franchise’s expansion. Netflix’s projects add stories and experiences around Stranger Things; the announcement does not say the original series is returning for another season.

Did fans really dislike the Season 5 ending?
A January 28, 2026 Collider article republished by AOL characterized many fans as disappointed, citing complaints about predictability and a lack of closure. That is an attributed report of reaction, not a measured consensus: the article does not provide representative polling, a defined sample, or a figure for how many viewers felt that way.
Netflix’s franchise announcements establish that the company is extending the universe, but they do not establish that it did so in response to Season 5 backlash. Netflix had already identified The First Shadow and an untitled animated spin-off as projects in the franchise in its 2023 franchise update, which also confirmed that Season 5 would be the original series’ final season.

How large is the franchise’s audience?
Netflix reported 1.5 billion combined views for all five Stranger Things seasons through March 2026. That is Netflix’s own figure, not an independent audience measurement; it indicates the scale of the franchise without establishing how viewers felt about the finale.
