Reports in 2023 documented both supportive responses and transphobic criticism after Chris Tyson publicly discussed hormone replacement therapy (HRT). MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, defended Tyson and rejected claims that her changing appearance threatened his channel. Those reports show contrasting reactions, but they do not establish how representative either response was of MrBeast’s full audience.
What prompted the reactions in 2023?
In April 2023, Tyson publicly discussed starting HRT. The Advocate reported that her announcement drew encouragement as well as transphobic attacks. It also described a YouTube video presenting her changing appearance as a possible problem for MrBeast’s popularity. That framing treated Tyson’s gender presentation as a channel liability rather than as a personal matter.
Donaldson pushed back publicly. As quoted by The Advocate on April 14, 2023, he wrote: “Chris isn’t my ‘nightmare’ he’s my fucken friend and things are fine. All this transphobia is starting to piss me off.” The Advocate reported that Tyson’s tweet about her transition journey received almost 40 million views; that is a reported view count, not a measure of how many viewers supported or criticized her.
How did Tyson describe her identity?
In a 2023 interview with Anthony Padilla, Tyson described herself as a transgender woman and reflected on how therapy and self-reflection helped her understand her relationship to gender expectations and masculinity. The Independent quoted her saying: “I’m just so excited to authentically be myself. The person you knew for a long time was a facade. This is the real me. I’m still the same person, I just look a little different.”

In February 2024, TIME reported that Tyson had come out as transgender in 2023, was undergoing hormone therapy, and felt comfortable presenting authentically at work. That account adds context to her own experience; it does not turn public reactions into a measurable split among fans.
What evidence is there of support as well as criticism?
The Advocate reported both attacks and supportive responses in 2023. In January 2024, it described Tyson marking one year on HRT and receiving supportive messages from trans fans alongside online attacks. Together, these reports document opposing kinds of responses: some people targeted Tyson with transphobia, while others expressed encouragement. They are examples reported in coverage, not a representative survey.

No published statistic in the cited reporting establishes what proportion of MrBeast fans supported Tyson, opposed her, or had no public reaction. A widely viewed tweet, a critical video, and supportive messages can show that a debate was visible without showing how common any view was across the audience. The phrase “sharply divided” is therefore best understood as a description of the visible contrast in reported reactions, not a quantified finding about all fans.

Tyson’s gender presentation and the reactions reported in 2023 should be kept distinct from events that followed in 2024. In July, TIME reported that Tyson left “all things MrBeast” after allegations, which she denied. Donaldson said he had removed her from the company and channel while an independent investigation proceeded. These later events do not, by themselves, explain what drove the earlier reactions to her gender presentation.

In November 2024, the Associated Press reported that an investigation lasting nearly three months found no basis for specified allegations that MrBeast team members had committed sexual misconduct or knowingly employed people with illegal or questionable histories. AP also reported that investigators identified isolated workplace harassment and misconduct, and that the company dismissed employees. Those findings concern the investigation’s stated scope; they do not measure fan opinion or establish why people reacted to Tyson’s transition.
