Tom Cruise’s physical commitment and the film’s large-scale stunts provide the strongest jolts of excitement in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. But at 179 minutes, its exposition-heavy story and crowded cast leave long stretches between those peaks feeling listless. The result is a spectacular action film that is less gripping when it has to explain itself.
Is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning worth watching?
It is worth watching if you come for Cruise’s stunt-driven action and the series’ practical, grounded spectacle. It is a harder recommendation if you want a brisk thriller with a clean, easy-to-follow plot. Director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie builds the film around returning characters and the consequences of the previous story, but the explanations often interrupt its forward motion.
The Associated Press review captures the tension: Jake Coyle praises how the series’ stunts “have always felt grounded in some reality and playfulness,” yet concludes that, in trying to tie everything together, the film “lost the plot.” TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek likewise argues that the story is the problem, describing its exposition-heavy dialogue as something that feels written to be absorbed in short installments. Those are critical judgments, not a measure of every viewer’s experience, but they point to the film’s central trade-off: thrilling physical spectacle paired with dense storytelling.
What works: the stunts and Cruise’s commitment
The action is the film’s most reliable source of momentum. Cruise, back as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, gives the set pieces a sense of physical risk and urgency. The spectacle is not only about scale; its appeal lies in seeing bodies move through perilous situations with a tactile, sometimes playful quality. TIME also sees the film’s big-screen presentation as part of its appeal.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the peaks memorable, even when the connective material feels heavy. Viewers who value inventive stunt sequences and theatrical scale may find enough to enjoy; those looking for sustained suspense from the plot may find that the film keeps stopping to explain its stakes.
Why the story can feel listless
Exposition slows the momentum
The film has a great deal of history and threat to connect. It is the eighth Mission: Impossible movie and follows Dead Reckoning, picking up not long afterward, according to Paramount+. Characters repeatedly lay out information and consequences that the audience needs to track the plot. That context can be useful, but the volume and delivery make the story feel less immediate than the action.

A crowded cast adds more threads
The returning ensemble includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, Esai Morales and Pom Klementieff. Their presence gives the film multiple relationships and storylines to resolve, but also adds to the sense of narrative congestion. The challenge is not simply keeping track of who is present; it is maintaining tension while the film revisits what everyone knows and what they must do next.
How long is The Final Reckoning?
The Associated Press lists the running time as 179 minutes—just short of three hours—and rates the film PG-13. Rotten Tomatoes displayed the runtime as 2 hours 50 minutes, the equivalent rounded to the nearest ten minutes. That length matters because the story’s frequent explanations can make the pauses between action sequences feel especially pronounced.

Reception is positive overall in the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed October 8, 2026: the site displayed an 80% Tomatometer based on 428 reviews and an 88% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings. These aggregates can change over time, and they do not erase the reservations voiced by individual critics. The Associated Press awarded the film 2.5 out of 4 stars, while both AP and TIME praised the spectacle but criticized the storytelling.
Is this the last Mission: Impossible movie?
Paramount presented the film as raising the question of a final mission, but the available official material does not establish that the franchise is definitively over. It is the eighth installment in the series; whether it is the last remains unsettled by the cited sources.
