Mirzapur’s first season is a nine-episode crime drama whose familiar gangster-story framework gets a lift from sharp dialogue and especially strong performances by Pankaj Tripathi and Divyenndu. Its stylized, frequent gun violence can feel gratuitous, so the series is best suited to viewers who want a dark, heightened crime saga rather than a restrained portrait of criminal life.
What is Mirzapur about?
Set in the fictional underworld of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Mirzapur centers on Akhandanand Tripathi, known as Kaleen Bhaiya, a carpet-factory owner whose criminal fortune is built on opium and gun-running. The first season follows brothers Guddu and Bablu as they enter his orbit. Kaleen Bhaiya’s son Munna, ambitious and volatile, makes an already unstable balance of power more dangerous.

The story is a familiar gangster saga, not a documentary account of organized crime. Its appeal lies less in an unfamiliar premise than in the characters’ shifting loyalties, the dialogue, and the actors carrying the drama.
How strong are the performances?
Pankaj Tripathi and Divyenndu
Pankaj Tripathi gives Kaleen Bhaiya a controlled presence that helps anchor the show’s heightened world. Divyenndu brings an erratic intensity to Munna, making his ambition an active source of tension rather than mere backstory. In her November 17, 2018 review for Scroll, Nandini Ramnath singled out Tripathi’s nuanced, enjoyable performance and praised the series’ sharp dialogue.

The ensemble
Ali Fazal plays Guddu and Vikrant Massey plays Bablu. Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda are also part of the ensemble. Beena, Sweety, and Golu have consequential roles in the season’s conflicts; the story is not limited to the men competing for control. In a contemporaneous Cinema Express interview, Tripathi described Kaleen Bhaiya as distinct from his earlier gangster roles, while Fazal praised the layered writing and interlocking character trajectories. Those are the actors’ perspectives, rather than independent critical judgments.
Does the violence work?
The show uses guns and violence frequently, often in an operatic, stylized register. Ramnath’s 2018 Scroll review judged that violence nearly always gratuitous in its presentation. That is a critical assessment, but it is a useful viewing warning: if graphic or exaggerated depictions of violence are a deal-breaker, the season may not be for you. Viewers comfortable with heightened brutality may find it part of the show’s deliberately hard-edged tone.

Is Mirzapur Season 1 worth watching?
It is worth trying if you enjoy ensemble crime dramas and are willing to watch a familiar power struggle for its performances and dialogue. Tripathi and Divyenndu provide the clearest reasons to stay with it, while the women’s storylines broaden the season beyond the central rivalry. The main reservation is tonal: the stylized violence can overwhelm the drama rather than deepen it. Ramnath’s review, published the day after the series launched, captures that balance—strong acting and sharp lines on one side, gratuitous operatics on the other.
Who made the first season, and when did it arrive?
The nine-episode first season was created by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna. Anshuman, Gurmeet Singh, and Mihir Desai directed episodes. It launched on Amazon Prime Video on November 16, 2018.

The review above is specifically about the 2018 first season, not the later installments. Amazon India describes season three as a ten-episode continuation of the struggle for power, territory, and survival, with Guddu and Golu central to an unstable throne. Its affiliated review praises craft elements including dialogue, casting, music, camera work, direction, and editing, while also observing familiar character behavior and a gruesome scene. That is a platform-published assessment, not an independent review.

Amazon India said season four was in development when it announced season three; that announcement did not give a release date. The franchise has also expanded beyond the series: About Amazon India reported that Mirzapur: The Movie opened in theatres across India on September 4, 2026. That date describes its theatrical opening, not current theatre availability or a later streaming date.
