Annabel Beam’s story in Miracles from Heaven is based on her family’s account of her childhood illness, a fall into a hollow tree, and a later recovery they understood as miraculous. The memoir and film recount that experience, but the sources available here do not independently verify the diagnosis, the reported remission, or a supernatural explanation.
What Annabel Beam’s family says happened
Christy Wilson Beam, Annabel’s mother, recounts in her memoir that Annabel spent much of her childhood dealing with a serious digestive disorder and undergoing hospital care. The publisher describes the illness broadly as a rare digestive disorder. A 2016 interview report identifies it as pseudo-obstruction motility disorder, but that is interview reporting rather than a medical record. Hachette’s book description and the Beam family’s official site present the family’s account.

According to the memoir’s account, Annabel fell headfirst three stories into a hollowed-out tree and survived. The story then describes a religious experience during the incident and a subsequent disappearance of chronic symptoms. These claims are presented by the publisher and family as events in the memoir; they should not be mistaken for independently established medical findings.
What Annabel experienced in the film versus the real account
Miracles from Heaven is an adaptation of Christy Beam’s memoir, not a scene-by-scene documentary record. In a 2016 interview with Religion News Service, Beam said, “Most of the events (in the movie) are true; they’ve just taken a little dramatic license with them.”

- In this inspiring true story, a mother (Jennifer Garner) searches for hope and a cure when she discovers her daughter has a rare disease.
She singled out the rescue as a difference: “In the book and in the real story, Annabel doesn’t come out of the tree unconscious.” Beam said Annabel helped with her own rescue. The movie portrays that detail differently. The Banner’s Religion News Service interview records Beam’s explanation.
What is independently confirmed—and what is not
The sources supporting the account are the memoir and publisher material, the family’s website, and interviews. They establish what the Beam family says happened, but the sources reviewed do not include primary clinical records documenting Annabel’s precise diagnosis or the reported remission. Nor do they establish a supernatural cause. The responsible way to describe the story is as the family’s testimony, not as proof of a medical treatment effect or a medically verified miracle.
A Christian Post interview report uses the term pseudo-obstruction motility disorder. Because that source is an interview report, it does not substitute for treating-clinician documentation; the publisher uses the broader term “digestive disorder.”

For the family’s fuller account, the original source is Christy Wilson Beam’s memoir, Miracles from Heaven: A Little Girl and Her Amazing Story of Healing. Hachette identifies its listed paperback as 224 pages, ISBN 9780316381833, with a sale date of November 17, 2015. The publisher also lists an unabridged audiobook and a media tie-in paperback; current availability and pricing can vary. Reading the memoir offers the family’s perspective, but does not independently confirm the medical or spiritual claims.
