April 2025 brought viral clips of audiences cheering, shouting “Chicken jockey!” and throwing popcorn during A Minecraft Movie. Some cinemas responded with warnings or local restrictions, while Cineworld separately invited fans to make noise at designated screenings. Those reports describe particular venues and moments—not proof that most screenings were disorderly.
Why “Chicken jockey!” became the flashpoint
A Minecraft Movie, Warner Bros.’ first live-action, big-screen adaptation of Minecraft, opened in North America on 4 April 2025 and began its international release on 2 April, according to the official movie site. Videos circulated of audiences reacting loudly to recognizable moments, especially when Jack Black’s character said “Chicken jockey!” The Guardian reported cheering and shouting, as well as popcorn being thrown.
Cheering is audible enthusiasm; throwing food creates a mess and can disrupt other patrons. That difference helps explain why venues treated some behavior as more than spirited participation.
What cinemas did—and why there was no single new rule
Responses varied by venue. UK cinemas posted warnings, and the Regent Cinema in Newtown said it would take a “zero-tolerance approach” and stop screenings if audiences went too far, as reported by The Guardian. Other reported measures included extra monitoring or possible ejection. These were local venue responses, not a new industry-wide regulation.

A local age and supervision restriction in New Jersey
Township Theatre in Washington, New Jersey, barred unaccompanied minors after an incident it said occurred on 4 April. The Guardian reported that the theatre’s social-media post described unsupervised groups of boys engaging in unacceptable behavior, including vandalism. The post said: “Large groups of unsupervised boys engaged in completely unacceptable behaviour, including vandalism … Moving forward: Any minors wishing to see The Minecraft Movie MUST be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.” This was Township Theatre’s reported policy, not a national rule.
Viral clips did not represent every screening
The Guardian also reported that staff at a Cineworld in Didsbury, Manchester, described early-afternoon screenings they had encountered as quiet, with no rowdy or antisocial behavior. No representative statistic establishes what share of screenings were disruptive; viral videos and individual venue reports cannot show how common the behavior was.

Ordinary screenings versus invited participation events
For a regular show, do not assume that a popular catchphrase or cosplay makes shouting welcome. Follow the venue’s posted rules and staff directions; throwing food or interfering with other guests can cross a clear line even where enthusiastic reactions are tolerated.
Cineworld offered a different arrangement: one-off Chicken Jockey 4DX screenings on 13 April 2025, where fans could dress as Minecraft characters and whoop, clap or shout the catchphrase. Its announcement set a boundary too: “No mess please, just good clean fun.” Cineworld described its 4DX format as using motion, strobe lighting, wind, water spray and smells; those are the cinema chain’s description of the experience.

| What to check | Ordinary screening | Designated participation event |
|---|---|---|
| Shouting or cosplay | Check local guidance; do not assume it is invited. | May be explicitly welcomed, as at Cineworld’s one-off 13 April 2025 event. |
| Food throwing and cleanup | Throwing popcorn can disrupt the show and leave a mess. | Cineworld’s event still asked for “No mess please, just good clean fun.” |
| Staff response | Venue warnings may include stopping a show or removing disruptive patrons. | Participation remains subject to venue boundaries and staff direction. |
| Age or supervision rules | Check the specific venue; Township Theatre’s reported restriction applied locally. | Check the event’s own terms; no general age rule for participation events is established here. |
How to avoid surprises at your screening
- Check the listing: look for an explicit label such as a sing-along, fan event or audience-participation screening. A standard listing is not an invitation to disrupt the show.
- Read the venue’s current rules: age and supervision requirements, food policies and responses to disruptive behavior can vary by cinema and location.
- Follow staff instructions: if asked to quiet down, stop throwing items or leave, treat that as the venue’s direction for that screening.
