On June 5, 2025, Elon Musk claimed on X that Donald Trump was named in unreleased Epstein files and that this was why they had not been made public. Musk offered no evidence for either part of the claim, according to contemporaneous reporting. The accusation came during a public dispute between the two men; it is not an established finding that Trump concealed records or committed a crime.
What did Musk accuse Trump of?
Musk posted: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” PolitiFact reproduced the post and reported that Musk did not provide evidence for it. PolitiFact
The accusation surfaced on June 5, 2025, amid a public fight over a federal tax and spending bill. Trump criticized Musk, while Musk attacked the administration’s bill; the Associated Press reported that Trump threatened to terminate government subsidies and contracts for Musk’s companies during the clash. The Associated Press
When PolitiFact asked the White House whether Trump was named in the files, spokesperson Karoline Leavitt criticized Musk’s dissatisfaction with the bill instead. That response did not answer the question; it should not be treated as either a denial or an admission. PolitiFact

What evidence supports the accusation?
The available evidence in the cited reporting supports a narrower point: Trump and Jeffrey Epstein had documented social contact. PolitiFact reported that they attended some of the same parties in the 1990s and that flight logs showed Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet at least seven times. The same fact-check said it found no documented evidence in released investigative and prosecution records tying Trump to Epstein’s crimes, and no documented evidence that Trump visited Epstein’s private island. PolitiFact
Those facts do not establish that Trump was named in unreleased records, much less that his alleged presence explains why any records were withheld. A person’s appearance in investigative files, if established, would not by itself prove wrongdoing.

What happened after Musk posted?
Musk later deleted the Epstein-related posts. On June 11, 2025, he wrote: “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.” That was a general statement about his posts; it did not provide evidence for, or a detailed retraction of, the specific claim about the files. PolitiFact
What did the later DOJ and FBI review find?
In July 2025, the Justice Department and FBI review concluded that investigators found no incriminating “client list” and no credible evidence that Epstein blackmailed prominent people. It also affirmed the prior finding that Epstein died by suicide. Reuters reported those findings. They describe the review’s conclusions; they do not show that every Epstein-related record had been released or determine why particular records were withheld. Reuters

What have later Epstein-file releases added?
The January 2026 release
On January 30, 2026, the Justice Department said it had published more than 3 million additional pages under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, bringing the total production to nearly 3.5 million pages. DOJ said notable individuals and politicians were not redacted in the release. The page count describes the department’s production; it does not establish the contents of every document or the motive behind earlier withholding. U.S. Department of Justice
Additional records reported in March 2026
In March 2026, the Associated Press reported that DOJ published additional records concerning a woman’s uncorroborated accusations against Trump. DOJ said the records had been incorrectly coded as duplicative and were inadvertently omitted from the earlier production. The report does not corroborate the accusations, and they are distinct from Musk’s 2025 claim about why records had not been released. The Associated Press

Checking the DOJ library
The DOJ Epstein Library page was last updated September 11, 2026, and says it may be updated if additional documents are identified for release. That date is a status marker, not a promise that the library will remain unchanged. DOJ Epstein Library

Musk made a serious allegation during a political and personal dispute, but the cited reporting says he offered no evidence for the assertion that Trump was in unreleased files or that this explained their non-release. Documented social contact between Trump and Epstein is not proof of criminal conduct or of a cover-up. Later reviews and releases add information about the records, but they do not substantiate Musk’s specific claim about the reason for withholding them.
