Directed by Richard Gray and written by Eric Belgau, it pairs an ensemble cast—including Gabriel Byrne, Thomas Jane, Isaiah Mustafa, Anna Camp, Nat Wolff and Richard Dreyfuss—with a story of suspicion, secrets and a newcomer accused of murder. It was released in North America in theaters and on demand in 2022; current streaming and rental options vary by location.
What is Murder at Yellowstone City about?
Set in a declining boomtown in Montana, the film begins when a prospector’s discovery of gold seems to offer the community a new future. The prospector is then found dead, and a newcomer is arrested. As more killings and suspicions unsettle the town, neighbors turn against one another and the story builds toward a showdown. AMC Networks describes the newcomer as a former slave seeking a home there.

Is it worth watching?
It may suit viewers who want a traditional frontier setting with a murder investigation and an ensemble cast. It is less clearly a fit for someone looking for a brisk, action-heavy mystery: Rotten Tomatoes’ cited review excerpts show disagreement about the film’s momentum and tone. Variety’s Joe Leydon praised it as a well-crafted independent film that works as both a constructed mystery and a conventional Western; Los Angeles Times critic Noel Murray objected to its slow pace and muted tone. Those excerpts illustrate differing responses, not a complete review survey.
Rotten Tomatoes listed a 24% Tomatometer from 21 critic reviews and a 50% Popcornmeter from more than 100 audience ratings when accessed in 2026. These aggregator scores can change and reflect different groups of reviewers and users; they are context, not a definitive measure of whether the film will work for you.

Where was it filmed?
AMC Networks said the production filmed at a site known as Yellowstone City, built to represent an 1860s town, and that the movie was the first production filmed at the new western backlot at Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana. In the distributor’s April 21, 2022 announcement, director and producer Richard Gray said he had dreamed about the Wild West since childhood and called making the film with its cast at the Montana backlot a dream come true. He also described it as the first film shot at Yellowstone Film Ranch.
In a June 24, 2022 ComingSoon interview, actor Thomas Jane discussed the purpose-built town and the horse wranglers’ work. He also described the Western as an American myth whose appeal has spread around the world, arguing that it explores the tension between individual freedom and the limits of living in society.
