Spoilers for the full game, including sexual assault, pregnancy, suicide, and the deaths of the crew.
Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game about five crewmates stranded aboard the freighter Tulpar after co-pilot Jimmy crashes it. Its story is told out of order, initially letting Jimmy shape the account before later revelations expose his responsibility for the wreck and the suffering aboard the ship. The ending gives Curly a chance of survival, but does not confirm that he is rescued.
What is Mouthwashing about?
Developed by Wrong Organ and published by CRITICAL REFLEX, Mouthwashing was released on Steam on September 26, 2024. It follows the Tulpar’s five crew members after a wreck leaves them stranded in space with dwindling food and power, no realistic prospect of rescue, and a cargo hold full of mouthwash. Captain Curly is gravely injured in the crash, unable to move or speak. The official Steam description warns of extreme violence, gore, and mutilation.
Why is the story told out of order?
The game does not present events as a straightforward timeline. Flashbacks and changes in perspective regulate what the player knows, while Jimmy’s account encourages an early, incomplete understanding of the disaster. Wrong Organ said the non-linear form was planned from the beginning; narrative designer Johanna Kasurinen described the experience to The Washington Post as being “almost like a puzzle itself.”

That structure matters because Jimmy is not a reliable guide to his own conduct. As the story reveals what happened before the wreck and revisits the crew’s crisis, the player must separate what Jimmy claims from what his actions show.
What happened before the Tulpar crashed?
Curly and Jimmy were friends and colleagues: Curly was captain, and Jimmy was his co-pilot. Before the crash, the ship’s medic, Anya, tells Curly that she is pregnant by Jimmy and that Jimmy sexually assaulted her.
Curly confronts Jimmy and tells him to take responsibility. But Curly tries to handle the situation privately and preserve their friendship, and that response does not protect Anya. Kasurinen characterized Curly as “good-intentioned downplaying that is unfortunately common but very human.” His intentions do not make his intervention sufficient.

Who caused the crash?
Jimmy caused the Tulpar’s crash. Curly is left gravely injured in the wreck, while Jimmy survives. Afterward, Jimmy takes control and presents himself as the person trying to keep the crew alive. The later revelation overturns the impression his early framing creates: Curly did not cause the disaster.
What happens to the crew after the crash?
The crew runs out of options
The Tulpar’s cargo is mouthwash, not food or a way to escape. With supplies dwindling and rescue not expected, the crew’s isolation deepens. Swansea, the mechanic and a recovering alcoholic, drinks the cargo. Wrong Organ has described the mouthwash as an intentionally absurd, bleak choice, with humor and horror deliberately mixed in.
Anya and Curly remain in the medical bay
Anya stays with Curly, whose injuries leave him unable to care for himself or communicate. Jimmy tries to reach the utility area and sends Daisuke, an intern, through a damaged vent to get to the bay. Daisuke is badly injured. Swansea, protective of the intern, kills him to end his suffering.

The remaining crew members die
Anya dies before the final sequence. After a confrontation, Jimmy kills Swansea. By the end, the other crew members are gone, leaving Jimmy alone with Curly.

Jimmy puts Curly into the remaining functioning cryopod. The game then leaves Jimmy out of view, strongly implying that he shoots himself. Curly is in cryosleep, but the story does not establish whether anyone finds or rescues him.

The cryopod has a concrete purpose: it preserves Curly and gives him a possibility of future rescue. Jimmy’s motive is less certain. The final act can be read as a way for him to cast himself as a rescuer or hero, but that is an interpretation rather than a confirmed account of what he intends. As Kasurinen told The Washington Post, “Good intentions don’t mean a whole lot after the situation has already gotten massively out of hand.”

The gesture does not reverse Jimmy’s responsibility for the crash, his assault of Anya, or the crew’s suffering. The game leaves open whether his last action is accountability or another attempt to frame himself favorably. It offers no confirmed redemption or happy resolution.
How to read Jimmy’s claim that he takes responsibility
Jimmy says he is taking responsibility, but repeatedly acts in ways that evade it. His early narration shifts blame and encourages the player to accept his version; later revelations show why that version cannot be trusted. Curly’s attempt to deal with Jimmy privately also illustrates a different failure: good intentions and private confrontation are not enough to protect Anya when the person causing harm remains in control.
The game’s central tension is therefore not simply whether Jimmy performs a final self-sacrificing act. It is whether that act can count as accountability after his earlier choices caused harm and denied responsibility. The game raises the question without settling it.
