Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Chris Hemsworth and Troye Sivan attended the 2024 Met Gala in looks by Balenciaga, Diesel, Tom Ford and Prada, respectively. Their outfits took different routes through the night’s “The Garden of Time” dress code, which accompanied the Costume Institute exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
What the four stars wore
| Guest | Designer | Documented details |
|---|---|---|
| Nicole Kidman | Balenciaga | A Demna recreation inspired by a Cristóbal Balenciaga gown from the spring 1951 collection. Vogue described a white double silk satin bustier and a long, flared black skirt with hand-frayed organza embroidery intended to evoke feathers. Vogue’s report notes that the original was worn by Dorian Leigh and photographed by Richard Avedon for Harper’s Bazaar. |
| Kylie Minogue | Diesel | Vogue identified her gown as a Glenn Martens design and connected its framing to the exhibition’s Sleeping Beauty imagery. Minogue’s previous Met Gala appearance was in 2014. Vogue’s report. |
| Chris Hemsworth | Tom Ford | Vogue’s red-carpet gallery identifies Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky in Tom Ford. An ABC News Australia photo caption describes his suit as champagne-colored and silky; that is the caption’s description, not a separate garment specification. ABC News Australia’s gallery. |
| Troye Sivan | Prada | British Vogue identifies Sivan in Prada. An ABC News Australia caption describes black trousers, a powder-blue shirt and a black bib-like vest. ABC News Australia’s gallery. |
Kidman’s archive-inspired recreation
Kidman’s gown was a new creation based on a historic design, not the original 1951 garment. She told Vogue, “The Met Gala’s ‘The Garden of Time’ theme is so beautiful, I think I just fell in love with the idea of kissing a Balenciaga couture gown awake.” She also said, “Ensuring that just like Sleeping Beauty, no dress is truly ever left asleep, I am honored to be wearing Balenciaga’s creation this evening.” Both remarks were attributed to Kidman by Vogue in its May 6, 2024 report.
Why the red carpet drew on gardens and time
The Met Gala, formally the Costume Institute Benefit, was held on Monday, May 6, 2024. Its official dress code was “The Garden of Time”; the exhibition it accompanied was titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The exhibition was scheduled to run from May 10 through September 2, 2024. The two titles are related, but they are not interchangeable. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition page.
Vogue describes the dress code as drawing on J.G. Ballard’s short story “The Garden of Time,” in which a count cuts roses from his garden to delay an approaching mob. That literary reference helped shape a carpet where interpretations ranged from florals to techno-inspired fashion and Sleeping Beauty imagery. Vogue’s red-carpet gallery.

The Met said the exhibition brought together approximately 250 garments and accessories, connected visually through nature. Nature also served as a metaphor for fashion’s transience: garments are fragile objects that change, age and can be difficult to display. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2024.
How the four looks relate to the theme
- Kidman: The direct historical reference was a 1951 Balenciaga design recreated for the evening, while her own Sleeping Beauty language framed it as a couture gown being awakened.
- Minogue: Vogue linked the Diesel gown’s presentation to Sleeping Beauty imagery, echoing the exhibition’s title and concept.
- Hemsworth: The documented information identifies Tom Ford but does not establish a specific garden, time or exhibition reference in the suit.
- Sivan: The documented information identifies Prada and describes the visible outfit, but does not establish a specific thematic reference.
The event behind the red carpet
The Met named Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Wintour and Zendaya as co-chairs for the 2024 benefit. Shou Chew and Jonathan Anderson were honorary chairs. The benefit provides the Costume Institute’s primary annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations and capital improvements. The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
