Principal photography on the follow-up to The Passion of the Christ wrapped in May 2026. Its announced title is The Resurrection of the Christ, and Lionsgate has scheduled the story as two theatrical releases: Part One on May 6, 2027, and Part Two on May 25, 2028. Those are announced plans and may change.
Has Passion of the Christ 2 finished filming?
Yes. Lionsgate and Icon Productions announced on May 21, 2026, that principal photography had finished ahead of schedule after 134 days of filming in Italy. The listed locations were Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi’s Torre Guaceto area, and Matera. Lionsgate and Icon’s production-wrap announcement described the work as complete.
In August 2026, Gibson said both parts had been filmed in Rome together and that he was editing and working on visual effects. That later comment adds a detail about the joint production; it does not replace the wrap announcement’s account of filming across several Italian locations. The Christian Post reported Gibson’s comments.
What is the official title of Passion of the Christ 2?
The announced umbrella title is The Resurrection of the Christ. The two installments are formally titled The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two. “Passion of the Christ 2” remains a familiar shorthand, not the announced title. Lionsgate’s announcement gives both installment titles.

Why is it being released in two parts?
Gibson has said the story needed two films to provide broader context for the salvation narrative. In comments reported by CBN, he said his screenplay drew on the four Gospels, Acts, letters from St. Paul and St. Peter, and writings by other historical Christian figures. These are Gibson’s descriptions of his creative approach, not an independently verified account of the finished films’ contents. CBN’s report covered his explanation.
Gibson also described the challenge of adapting the resurrection narrative to CBN’s Gordon Robertson: “The event itself is almost impossible to comprehend. And so how do we make that communicable not only for ourselves but for other people?” CBN reported the interview.

What changed since the earlier production update?
A January 2025 report said production was targeted for 2026; that was an earlier plan, not the current status. By May 2026, Lionsgate and Icon had announced that principal photography had wrapped, along with the two-part title and theatrical schedule. ComingSoon’s January 2025 report documents the former target; the May 2026 announcement provides the later update.
The original film’s limited theatrical rerelease ran from September 10 to 17, 2026, with a 4K remaster, Dolby Atmos sound, and a Part One preview for ticket buyers. That announced window has passed; it is not a current ticket offer. The Fathom/Variety report covered the rerelease.
