Deanne Frieders founded This Farm Girl Cooks after leaving a corporate job and joining her husband’s northern Illinois farm life. A practical question—what food could be brought to people working in the fields?—became a recipe project, then a full-time business built around manageable meals for busy households.
Who is Deanne Frieders?
Frieders is the founder of This Farm Girl Cooks. Her official biography describes her as a recipe creator, cookbook author, speaker and Illinois farm wife. She grew up in a small town, married Ryan in her late 30s, left her corporate job and moved to his family’s farm. She has said, “I didn’t grow up on a farm. I grew up in a rural community, but really didn’t pay much attention to the corn growing at the end of the street,” in an August 26, 2024 profile by Successful Farming.
That profile describes Ryan as a seventh-generation farmer in northern Illinois. At the time of publication, it reported that the family grew corn and soybeans with his parents and kept a small herd of cattle; those details are the profile’s account, not a current farm census.
How field meals led to This Farm Girl Cooks
In 2013, Frieders’ husband asked her to help prepare field meals. She did not initially know what that meant, so she learned by trying recipes and seeing what worked for people busy with farm work. She started sharing the recipes with friends and made the project official as This Farm Girl Cooks in 2016, a founding year also given in her official biography.

Frieders told Successful Farming that she first set up the site simply to share recipes. In time, she realized it could become a source of income and her full-time work. “I set up my website, not realizing it could be a revenue stream. It just happened very organically, and I didn’t really know exactly what I was doing,” she said in the 2024 profile.
What makes a field meal work?
For Frieders, a field meal is shaped by the conditions in which people eat it, not just by a farm-inspired name. Food may need to be served immediately or wait for a few hours; handheld options can help, and a meal that does not require a knife is practical. She described learning through trial and error: “When I first started doing field meals, I tried to be fancy, and that doesn’t work,” she told Successful Farming.

- PERFECT SIZE: Reasonable size to easily hold hardcover cookbook from 8.3 x 11.7 inches and up to 9 x 12.8 inches. But it won't be able to hold items over 10 x 13.9 inches. The extended bottom length allows you to adjust a comfortable reading angle and does not hinder page turning.
- FARMHOUSE STYLE: Rustic brown, distressed finishes and clear wood texture show the natural and farmhouse characteristics nicely. The cookbook stand will improve the aesthetic of your kitchen while freeing hands. Goes so good with modern farmhouse decor!
- STURDY AND DURABLE: The cookbook holder is made of natural and high-quality solid wood, which is lighter and sturdier than bamboo. The wood is carbonized to show a beautiful and clear wood grain; all edges are smooth and comfortable through finely sanded. The cross-type assembly design is flexible, compact and stable in structure that doesn't take up too much kitchen counter space.
- MULTI-FUNCTIONAL DISPLAY STAND: This well made handmade rack can not only be used as a recipe book holder, but also as a tablet stand, for painting, music sheet, magazines, craft display stand, record holder and etc.
- AN AMAZING GIFT IDEA: PUERSI focus on designing and offers high quality handcrafted wood products that can served as the perfect gift for housewarming, birthday, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas!
She also encourages people to pause the tractors and sit down to eat when they can. Her account is specific to her experience on her family’s farm; schedules and food needs differ from one farm and workday to another.

Frieders’ biography highlights field meals, family meals and make-ahead recipes. It also says she is a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. That is a credential reported by her site, not evidence for a particular health outcome or dietary claim.
The site’s recipe-development page says recipes are developed and tested in Frieders’ home kitchen, using practical ingredients and instructions. The same page describes the site as having more than one million annual readers. Separately, Successful Farming’s August 2024 profile said she reached “tens of thousands of home cooks every month.” These are differently worded audience figures from different sources and should not be treated as a single audited or necessarily current count.

Cookbooks and the idea behind the food
Frieders is the author of Meals in Motion and Table to Tailgate, according to her official biography. Meals in Motion connects especially closely to her field-meal story. She has described food as a way to bring people together: “Food is like the perfect vessel that we can all center around, and everything else stems from that,” she told Successful Farming.
