Is Meg 2: The Trench based on a book?
Yes. The official film site names Steve Alten’s novel The Trench as source material. That confirms the book connection, but does not by itself show how faithfully the screenplay adapts the novel.
Who made the film, and when was it released?
Warner Bros. Pictures and CMC Pictures present the film. Ben Wheatley directed; Jason Statham and Wu Jing headline a cast that also includes Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels and Cliff Curtis. Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber and Dean Georgaris are credited with the screenplay; the screen story is credited to Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. Is Meg 2 appropriate for kids?
That depends on the country’s rating system and a child’s sensitivity to peril and violence. Apple TV lists the US film as PG-13 for action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material. In the UK, the BBFC classification notes moderate threat, violence, bloody images and rude gestures; its detailed advice includes shark attacks on people and some bloody injury detail. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 27% Tomatometer based on 183 reviews and a 72% Popcornmeter based on 1,000+ verified ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are dated review aggregates, not fixed ratings. The critic score and audience score measure different groups and should not be read as interchangeable.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus reads: “It isn’t without its fun moments, but Meg 2: The Trench suffers from a disjointed story that drifts for too long before finally delivering a few campy thrills.” Its audience summary says the film delivers much of what viewers seek from a creature feature once it gets going.
